  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 12:25 PM) It goes to show that Mark Buehrle is a great teammate, streak be damned. Mark cared more about standing up for AJ and Tadahito vs his own personal accomplishments. The team obviously comes first to him, and I respect him for that. Exactly. He got the 5+ innings to qualify for the win. Perhaps Sosa will learn something watching it, that egoist jagoff. And Viz with the clutch K! w00t!
  2. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 09:45 PM) :rolly Wanna rethink that now, Qwert?
  3. QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:14 PM) I'm told that Steve has full sleeve tattoos and thats why he always wore long sleeve shirts. Wasn't the original Steve also in an ep of Homicide: Life on the Streets and that is one of the reasons that Nickelodeon had to replace him because kids saw him in the adult show as well and weren't able to rectify the two as just him being an actor? And PS Jim...that is scary that you are able to name those characters...::shudders::
  4. QUOTE(Princess Dye @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) .... absolutely wouldve been complaining if the opposite had happened.... if a trade had gone down, ppl would be saying how we gave up too much for Baez, etc sellers were asking for a lot this year... it's not like we were the only team trying to pry away Baez (or starters) to those displeased ppl out there... at least be happy we still have a farm system ... one we can trade away next year if we have to, when the market might be a little more fruitful. and that's another thing: the guys we have are better than a lot of whats available anyway. why throw away your young players for that? Exactly, Princess Dye. I mean look when we traded Dumbass Caballo away -- the threads started about getting a terrible .240 hitter that wouldn't help...yadda yadda yadda. Olivo being the future Hall of Famer and getting Garcia. There was lamenting and gnashing of e-teeth. If KW traded ANYBODY on the team the reactionaries here would have jumped on "Why did we have to give up X for that player? What a bad move by KW!". And for those who are disappointed, realize a few things. 1. We have the best record in baseball for pretty much the whole season 2. We are currently 14 games up in 1st place & have been enthroned there damn near the whole year. 3. The AL East pitching staffs aren't all that great. The AL Central is one of the stronger divisions in baseball recordwise...especially compared to the East. 4. We are 46 games away from clinching the division and it is possible to have it wrapped up by the end of August. Kick back. Grab a beer. Enjoy life. Life is good right now...damn good.
  5. To extropolate on Ian's sig quote: Soxtalk seems to be home of the GMs who never make bad trades ever and are totally perfect. Just ask 'em! I guess people need reminding of "My boy Olivo" being called a Hall of Famer from the year previous. f***ing kneejerk reactionaries. Too many teams saw themselves as contenders and the market was s*** so KW did what he could to upgrade the team. Blum is an asset defensively off the bench and he's currently got a higher OBP than Crede and is just .014 points below Crede in batting average. I'm happy that we got more bench help with a versatile player for a prospect -- and I think Olivo proves that we'll never know how prospects will pan out. Yes, it'd be nice to get another lefty reliever but the market was s***. No other team made a huge splash unless you consider Matt Lawton the trade that will catapault your team into the playoffs Christ, if I didn't know better, I would think that the Sox had a white flag sale & weren't 14 games up in the Central right now with the way some of the Chicken Littles are acting. I think with some of the people here on Soxtalk -- if KW walked on water they'd b****, piss and moan about him not being able to swim.
  6. I just watched John Woo's "Hard Boiled" (1992). Holy f***ing s***. If you are looking for an amazing amazing amazing amazing action movie -- pick this up. Chow Yun Fat does an amazing job. It is the archetypal renegade cop takes on syndicate (in this case an arms smuggling ring) but it is non-stop action the whole movie. Some of John Woo's best work (and done before coming to the US because the film would easily get a NC-17 rating if all the action and effects stayed the way they are...and the MPAA being a major reason that Woo's recent offerings have been pretty lackluster compared to his previous offerings in Hong Kong)
  7. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 01:08 PM) http://www.washingtontimes.com/op-ed/20050...81354-1414r.htm This is just one of the many usages of "corporate welfare" and I'm surprised the wider topic of corporate welfare hasn't come up in campaigns much (alright not really surprised since these same companies bankroll our damn candidates). Often times much more than $480,000 goes to these companies (usually it is in the millions) -- all at taxpayer expense. But I'm sure that the Washington Times and Michelle "Corellation Does Not Equal Causation -- a swipe at her book on WWII Internment" Malkin are doing this in the interest of ending corporate welfare and not just to be a partisan hack
  8. It is a whole bunch of comedians telling their own personal version of the joke "The Aristocrats". For those that don't know, this joke is real old -- all the way back to Vaudeville. The joke starts out with a family going to a talent agency (mom, dad, brother, sister, baby/dog) and they say they have an act for him. The agency says they don't hire family acts but the family begs to be able to perform for him in order to show how good they are. Then the comedian goes into telling a story trying to go into extreme shock value. Bizarre sex acts, etc. etc. are common because it tries to be as crude and tasteless as possible (but funny if you like that sort of humor). The joke's punchline is when the talent agency asks the family what the name of their act is and of course they say, "The Aristocrats!" Only the beginning and the end are set -- so the middle of the joke is totally up to the comedian's interpretation and imagination. The joke is usually done with a group of comedians and is a game of one-upsmanship to see which comedian can top the other stories by being more out there and funny. VIDEO DEFINITELY NSFW AND NOT FOR PEOPLE EASILY OFFENDED...BE FOREWARNED! http://www.spschat.com/RareMedia/videos/so...aristocrats.wmv -- South Park gives an example of this joke.
  9. Penn Jillette from Penn and Teller fame has made a new documentary called "The Aristocrats" which will come out in August. It is being heralded as quite possibly the most verbally "filthy" movie ever made. The controversy is of course that due to the extreme "dirty" words in the movie (which is a collection of standups telling different versions of the old Vaudeville joke 'the aristocrats'), AMC theaters has refused to show the film on any of their 3,500+ screens & some of the punditry is talking about movie obscenity, protecting the children etc. Anywho just wanted to see what the Soxtalk Nation thought about this & what peoples' opinions were. I for one am very much looking forward to seeing this movie.
  10. At work today (I work for a newspaper -- delivering papers to carriers when they get shorted papers, inserts, rubber bands etc. & getting papers to complaining customers since their carriers f***ed up), I get a call from the dispatcher that I have to go all the way across town to deliver a paper to a very irate customer that called in using a lot of profanity saying that they didn't receive their paper today. I drive about 1/2way out to the site and I get another call from the dispatcher -- disregard the previous call about the irate customer. They found their paper next to the door, instead of the paper being right in front of the door. Now this might just be me but wouldn't it make sense to look everywhere before calling up and acting like a giant jackass? But can't complain -- nice checks coming in & they pay my mileage that I use while driving around + pretty good hours (3:30-7 pm M-F and then 6:30-10 am on Sa-Sun) but I get some weekends off.
  11. Bill Frist -- alright...the man may not know whether tears & sweat can transmit HIV but he's come out for stem cell research and the current bill on the table about it-- bucking the far right leadership. Good to see a few of the wingnuts taking sane, logical stands.
  12. Alrighty...who is picking the next book cuz I needs to be getting to the library & picking it up. Cheat, Soxy, Spiff, Tex...somebody pick one & let's do this. I know Cheat suggested a book but it was still in hardcover, so maybe he wants to choose another one instead?
  13. They have games against non-league teams (i.e. Aussie National Team etc.) and I guess they count those in their records. That's the only thing I can think of.
  14. I was watching the news and they showed video of the kid playing. The anchors, in quite possibly one of the dumbest things spoken on air, said "Look! He's got his back turned to the TV. He's not even looking!" I threw an empty beer can at the TV -- f***ing idiots, even if he was looking at the screen it wouldn't help because....::drum roll:: He's f***ing blind!
  15. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldn...e/j29common.htm Here's my second column for the Herald. I can't believe there is a newspaper paying me to rant like I do on Soxtalk.
  16. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) Bill Hicks was awesome, but was he really that funny? I mean, I found myself either thinking hell yeah, or even rasing an eyebrow to some of the things he said, but never really laughing out loud. Like a lot of the better comics, he was more insightful, angry and witty. IMO of course. He had his moments where he was pretty witty and I was laughing pretty hard. He was more of a thinking man's comedian as you said.
  17. Bill Hicks was brilliant -- kinda eerie too to hear some of the quiet uneasiness of the audience when he broke into his philosophy about life and religion. I love his "Rant in E Minor" album.
  18. Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. That stuff is amazing. Otherwise is it Warsteiner or PBR.
  19. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) The thing is, most of them say it, see your quote, LCR. That's the difference to me, CNN and the "big three" as well as the NY Times and the bigger rags will all fight to the bitter end to say they're not biased, which is crap. I can handle it if they tell you that they are biased and let you decide what to watch. Right. I stand by the old HST quote that objective journalism is a pompous contradiction of terms. But Fox is one of the most vocal in their "Fair and Balanced" stance meanwhile their anchors are admitting that the F&B slogan is just a bunch of bulls***.
  20. YAS, I'm sure there is a strong contingent of the viewers who are like me -- grab a beer or three and laugh my ass off at the stupidity/lies their talking heads spew and the total non-debate that goes on in any of their shows. I think Neil Cavuto said it best about Fox: "Am I slanted and biased? You damn well bet I am."
  21. QUOTE(Spiff @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 07:08 PM) Yeah that was good stuff, I could see him being hesitant but Busey is the man. Their team is totally gonna win, especially with Jani going AWOL already. I think any time you're relying on the ex-lead who sang "Cherry Pie" then your team is in trouble. And Busey is the man! "Lemme finish the prayer, stupid!"
  22. QUOTE(Spiff @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) I'm not a fan, and it's not any moral reason, I just think it's boring. I'll take Celebrity Fit Club 2 or Surreal Life any day. Celeb Fit Club 2! Hellz yeah! I loved Willie Aames going to Busey's house for the exercise session and how scared he was about going.
  23. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 09:42 AM) This much I can agree with. Unfortunately there's nothing feasible and cost effective right now. We need to get cracking on this problem soon though. Not feasible because of the stock interests of our Congressmen not to mention how they've been bought off...er, excuse me, received campaign contributions.
  24. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 10:41 PM) If we don't do something to keep the moderate governments in power over in that region then we're f***ed, along with the rest of the world. Can you imagine a world where islamo-fascists control countries like Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and others? Think worldwide depression and 10 dollar a gallon gasoline. Perhaps, I'm thinking about weaning ourselves off of oil. Then the fundies can have control of all the oil they want with no major market to sell it in. And with Tex's comment...the Constitution is a set of rules that we don't get to throw away when we're scared. My personal favorite commentary about the 4th Amendment is when the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Agency Court of Review said that the Patriot Act's demand for "mere relevance to an ongoing investigation" was enough for warrants...the Court said that the Patriot Act may not cut the 4th Amendment mustard "but it almost certainly comes close." Funny, I don't remember seeing the "Almost certainly comes close" provisions to any right in my Constitution.
  25. QUOTE(CubKilla @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:43 PM) All I know is that I'm waiting for a gallon of gas to cost >$1.00 considering the War in Iraq was all for the oil . 1. Gas does cost over a $1 a gallon 2. I'll assume you meant less than instead of greater than 3. Profits for US corporations (many of which buy off, er excuse me...give campaign contributions to our government) are quite nice with the current war. Halliburton getting busted for price gouging, moving empty trucks and charging for it, etc. etc. And if you want to get into the "it is about oil" the Defense Planning Guidance of 1992 written by Cheney and Wolfowitz clearly states that the US role in the region should have a primary goal of controlling Middle Eastern oil.
