  1. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...NStory/National Back off Muslims, imam warns Ottawa By COLIN FREEZE Monday, July 25, 2005 Updated at 5:15 AM EDT From Monday's Globe and Mail A controversial Toronto imam warned Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan at a closed-door meeting to stop "terrorizing" Canadian Muslims. "If you try to cross the line I can't guarantee what is going to happen. Our young people, we can't control," Aly Hindy, the head of Scarborough's Salaheddin Islamic Centre, recalls telling the minister at the May meeting she held in Toronto with dozens of Muslim leaders. The meeting was part of an effort by Ms. McLellan to reach out to Canadian Muslims amid complaints that the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service are engaging in racial profiling. The minister and her officials have been meeting community leaders to explain they are not targeting Muslims generally, only individuals with possible terrorist links. By many accounts, the meetings have been positive and are contributing to a thaw in relations between Muslims and security agents, even if the exchange in May was a little heated. Mr. Hindy, who has long complained that CSIS is spying on him, his family and his mosque, told Ms. McLellan that a young Muslim woman complained to him she was roughed up by Canadian spies while her husband was away at prayers. This allegation could spur reprisals because "our women are the most valuable thing to us" and "for a Muslim, honour is more important than his life," Mr. Hindy said in a recent interview. He made the point to the minister. Several people who attended shrugged off the imam's remarks, but some Muslims and government agents later approached Mr. Hindy asking him to explain himself. "The police came to me and said, 'This is a kind of threat,' and I said yes," he said. "But it's for the good of this country. "And they said, 'Do you know some of the names of those people you expect to cause some problems?' And I said, 'You just open the telephone directory.' " While government investigators probing the woman's complaint told Mr. Hindy they have not found evidence of wrongdoing, he isn't giving the spy service the benefit of the doubt. "We believe CSIS should stop terrorizing us," he says in a flyer he is circulating to mosques. "CSIS is powerless. CSIS has no authority over you. If CSIS agents come to your door, do not open [it] for them." Toronto's Coalition of Muslim Organizations arranged the meeting, and said about 100 Muslim leaders attended. While COMO president Adam Esse noted that, "some people, when they talk, they get a little heated," he said the ministerial visit was "a sign of respect" and was worthwhile overall. "If you talk, you remove a lot of misconceptions, a lot of misunderstandings." A spokesman for Ms. McLellan agreed. "We feel it was constructive, positive," Alex Swann said. Even Mr. Hindy said that despite his differences with security agencies "the Deputy Prime Minister, she was very understanding." In the wake of the London bombings, Ms. McLellan has said that Canadians must become "psychologically prepared" for such an attack. She has also suggested such strikes are not related to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, in which Britain is a strong partner. Mr. Hindy believes the war in Iraq has caused young Muslims to want to fight against the United States and Britain. "I always say the No. 1 recruiter of al-Qaeda is George W. Bush," he said. The imam said six or seven young men have approached him to discuss "fighting overseas" in place such as Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he told them "people fighting in Iraq, they don't need more people." Instead, Canadian Muslims can wage non-violent jihads (holy struggles) at home. "You have a very good chance to serve Islam here," he said he told them. So, basically he tells Canada to back off, or else! He just threatened Canada. Then he lies and says "that their women are the most valuable thing to us". What? Huh? Then he makes up false charges of harrassment ala Al Sharpton. All this, from the religion of peace. As for the 6 or 7 young men who approached him about 'fighting overseas', they should be deported or in jail, immediately. Or would that somehow be profiling? Religion: The cause of all these bulls*** wars in the first place.
  2. QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 07:35 PM) I am more and more convinced that Musharraf is playing both sides. Which might explain why A.Q. Khan is still being coddled by the Pakistani government. He is kinda forced to play both sides. He doesn't want to be on the wrong side of an economic/military powerhouse like the US but at the same time he's gotta pander to the Pakistani military since they put him in power. Plus there is a lot of support within the military for the values put forth by the Taliban (in regards to gender roles, etc.) so he's gotta pander to the military as well.
  3. That was pretty damn intense. ::shudder::
  4. I thought it was pretty interesting how Tender wanted to tell people what to do and be their "mentor" with the phone line but then when he gets into the position of being the survivor preacher, he doesn't get to say or do anything on his own. He didn't write the prayer book. Every word out of his mouth is scripted for him by writers and the agent. The Super Bowl moment was hysterical. It was also interesting to hear about how he was always taking orders but it always seemed that he was in control a lot (i.e. telling the caseworker that she should clean for him or he'd kill himself etc) in order to get what he wanted.
  5. QUOTE(wsox08 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) This Charlie was horrible... so strange and couldn't compete with the original... Damn a movie that goes back closer to the source material. After seeing the original Raold Dahl was so outraged and pissed at the final cut (because it deviated so much from his book) that he refused to let the sequel be made into a film. Burton's film simply sticks more to the actual book.
  6. Nuke and Killa, I highly doubt that you've read "Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism" but it is a good read. http://antiwar.com/pat/ His book is drawn from an immense database on every suicide-bomb attack from 1980 to early 2004. Conclusion: The claim that 9/11 and the suicide bombings in Iraq are done to advance some jihad by "Islamofascists" against the West is not only unsubstantiated, it is hollow. "Islamic fundamentalism is not as closely associated with suicide terrorism as many people think," Pape tells The American Conservative in its July 18 issue. Indeed, the world's leader in suicide terror was the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka. This secular Marxist group "invented the famous suicide vest for their suicide assassination of Rajiv Ghandi in May 1991. The Palestinians got the idea of the vest from the Tamil Tigers." But if the aim of suicide bombers is not to advance Islamism in a war of civilizations, what is its purpose? Pape's conclusion: "uicide-terrorist attacks are not so much driven by religion as by a clear strategic objective: to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from the territory that the terrorists view as their homeland. From Lebanon to Sri Lanka to Chechnya to Kashmir to the West Bank, every major suicide terrorist campaign – over 95 percent of all incidents – has had as its central objective to compel a democratic state to withdraw." The 9/11 terrorists were over here because we were over there. They are not trying to convert us. They are killing us to drive us out of their countries. There is more at the link. When people like Brig. General William Looney state: "[iraqis] know we own their country. We own their airspace... We dictate the way they live and talk. And that's what's great about America right now. It's a good thing, especially when there's a lot of oil out there we need." then that is a reason people accessorize with dynamite. The flaunting all over the globe toppling governments we don't like (Arbenz in Guatemala all the way to the CIA attempts against Chavez in Venezuela) -- stopping our participation in terrorism (if you read the US definition of terrorism, US military actions qualify) will go a long way to ending terrorism.
  7. "They try to get a lead and they try to get their starting pitcher to go (deep into the game),'' Millar continued. Um...what team doesn't try to get a f***ing lead and have their starter go deep into the game to save their bullpen? And remember...it doesn't take the highest payroll in baseball to win a World Series...just the 2nd highest.
  8. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 10:56 AM) I do not like the direction the wheels are turning under GOP leadership of America. And I blame the Democrats. Apparently homeland security is not as much about protecting American's from the threat of explosive terrorists as it is about protecting America from the "so-called" evils of society. When I hear O'Reilly suggest that a child molester should get no less than 25 yrs for a first offense I shake my head. Yes I am religious & yes I feel such an act is heinous & evil but I am not nieve like O'Reily to suggest that every offense is a legitimate one & that such a subjectively driven concept is wrought with potential for abuse. Why do I keep reading about homeland security being considered with porn, kiddy-porn, drugs, video games, night clubs, strip joints, internet porn sites, raising taxes through "security fees", & basically other "so-called" social ills in America? Why am I not reading about their efforts in tracking & prevention of explosive terrorist acts both abroad & overseas? Do you see where this is leading? Why do I keep thinking "witch hunt" when I read about how homeland security & the FBI are doing their best to thwart media piracy & porn? What does that have to do with combating religiously minded explosive terrorists that feel binge drinking is a mortal sin? How many criminal cases in America would be iron-clad? Meaning the evidence was so overwhelming that there was no reasonable shadow of doubt? Very few. Yet here is O'Reilly advocating that a first offense child molester should receive no less than 25 yrs. What's next? Will O'Reilly's version of homeland security start arresting Americans & locking them up for no less than 10 yrs simply because they have pornographic images of people that look underage? So who do I blame? Democrats. They spent more time, effort, & resources defending atheism in this country than they have jobs or liberty. The two party system worked in America because the Republicans were devoted to the rich & wealthy & the Democrats were devoted to the unions & the common man. That's the tradition behind the two parties. Yet in the midst of civil rights in defense of blacks during the Korean & Vietnam wars that tradition has been replaced with Democrats being devoted to furthering the cause of atheism & Republicans devoted to furthering the cause of Biblically inspired faiths. While this battle has waged now for more than 50 yrs the Democrats have evolved to were they too are now devoted to the rich & wealthy. There is no party with any hope of gaining strength that supports the unions & common man any more. My challenge to Democrats is to abandon your crusade of atheism, stand as a voice of liberty while embracing God, & get turn your devotion back to the unions & the common man. No one thinks of atheism as being progressive any more. Even the Chinese are embracing religion so long as they can control. Spiritually/religious driven people in the world are rising in numbers. They make up the bulk of new immigrants in America. Atheism is a dying cause. Stop calling people stupid or insinuating people are dumb because they are loyal to a faith you have no capacity to understand. Not just in it's dogma but also in terms of what it means to their everyday lifes. Dump atheism & embrace liberty. Liberty means the government shouldn't give a rat's ass about what serves as entertainment for the average American. Period. The government has an obligation of defining what is considered as unreasonable & punishable by law in as narrow a vision as possible so as to not curtail liberty. There is nothing to be gained by clinging to atheism accept more lost seats in the House & growing weaker in the Senate. If you were to start vocally supporting school vouchers & school prayer initiatives do you really think atheists would start voting republican? So you are essentially pissing off 10's of millions of voters to appease a few million that are going to vote for you anyways. Stupid. If Americans could start thinking of Democrats a party that likes God & religion again then maybe the important ideals like unions, worker benefits, subsidies, regulation, re-vamping anti-trust laws, & the multitude of other economic problems facing our nation could be debated again. Maybe the Democrats would forgo their ties to the rich & wealthy to once again support the economic viability of unions & the common man. It's just a thought. Only in your stat controlled, acronym developing mind would the problems of Congress be blamed on just one party. And I haven't seen s*** as to the Democrats promoting atheism. But it would be factual since the Founders were not Christian. Take the Treaty of Tripoli stating that the United States is not founded in any sense on the Christian religion -- written under the Washington administration and approved by the Senate under John Adams. t was read aloud to the Senate, and each Senator received a printed copy. This was the 339th time that a recorded vote was required by the Senate, but only the third time a vote was unanimous (the next time was to honor George Washington). There is no record of any debate or dissension on the treaty. It was reprinted in full in three newspapers - two in Philadelphia, one in New York City. There is no record of public outcry or complaint in subsequent editions of the papers. Some Democrats like religion but do not feel like there needs to be a merger of such as the current administrations have been doing. You're nothing more than a partisan hack -- if you don't like the way the GOP is going, here's a novel f***ing idea. Blame the GOP.
  9. I just saw Batman Begins last night. Very entertaining movie except for one big plothole for me. SPOILER alert When Ra's Al Ghoul and the League of Shadows turns on that water vaporizing machine to enact Scarecrow's toxins in the water -- well, human beings are 70% water. If this machine would vaporize water molecules, then why didn't everybody in Gotham including the League of Shadows explode under the huge pressure?
  10. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) So i have to ump a double header tomorrow (no shorts or anything...full regular umpire gear and pants behind the plate). Forecast around here is calling for 98 degrees, head index of 104. Ridiculous. I may melt. Tex, is this what Texas feels like? I'll be thinking of you on my day off as I sit in my apartment doing laundry with the a/c blasting.
  11. Also, V Is For Vendetta was originally written in 1989, so it isn't a total slap at Bush /dodging the whining that will be soon to come
  12. If Alan Moore has a lot of input into the film, then it'll probably be a very good movie. Moore is a very gifted writer in comics. I can't wait to see this assuming it will be nearly as good as the comic.
  13. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 10:47 AM) And it's hilarious to you why? Because you don't agree with Goldberg's views? What if it was Al Franken being ambushed? Or some other liberal writer? Methinks your liberal horns are showing. It is just fun to see a hack -- especially one who can't get facts straight -- get smoked and exposed as an idiot, be they from the right or the left.
  14. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) I believe there is a scene that she is in some underwear and she didn't like the look of them so she wanted to go nude but bay would not let her. The more important question is why is Michael Bay still allowed to make films?
  15. http://winterson.com/2005/06/episode-iii-b...ke-of-west.html Chinese translations back into English. Some of the better ones are "Revenge of the Sith" becoming "backstroke of the west" and the Jedi Council becoming the "Presbyterian Church". Figured it'd be good for a few laughs.

  17. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 01:38 AM) The next successful guest host for Jim Rome: I hear that he gets his own show on ESPN next month. Why is Larry King going to guest host for Jim Rome?

  20. QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 06:36 AM) It can't be more of a trainwreck than "Britney & Kevin: Chaotic". That show just has two morons. Being Bobby Brown has two moron crackheads. And wino, who knew that doing crack and beating Whitney Houston could be an entire TV series?
  21. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 07:07 AM) You have lots of groups saying they will protest at the Republican national convention. Why SHOULDN'T the FBI look into them just to make sure there are no terrorists among them. What better place to wreak havok that at the convention? They are going there to protest, and we all know how the peace-loving liberal protesters can be anything but peaceful while protesting. Not sure about the ACLU, though, unless they were trying to see if terrorist groups may have been funneling them money to fight Bush? No clue on that one. It is just COINTELPRO under a new name. From Wikipedia: COINTELPRO is an acronym ('COunter INTELligence PROgram') for a program of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation aimed at investigating and disrupting dissident political organizations within the United States. Although covert operations have been employed throughout FBI history, the formal COINTELPRO operations of 1956-1971 were broadly targeted against organizations that were (at the time) considered to have politically radical elements, such as Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference to organizations whose stated goal was the violent overthrow of the US government such as the Weathermen, to racist and segregationist groups like the Ku Klux Klan. The document that launched the COINTELPRO operations against Black groups directed FBI agents to "track, expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize the activities" of these dissident movements and their leaders. Notice it doesn't say anything about arresting them for being criminals -- just become a domestic thought police.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) My point is, there are so many here that want to start threads and conversations fully for the purpose of saying what an asshole Bush and his adminstration is. Then, others come on here and start saying what an asshole Clinton is and will support Bush to the bitter end. They are ALL assholes, and we elect them. We all think they should do better then they do, but then come election day, we become ball-less (sorry ladies but you get my point) robots who pull the lever of least resistance. It's a f***ing shame. This country is going to hell, slowly but surely, but as long as those fat-ass paychecks keep rolling in, it doesn't matter. America: the modern day Roman Empire. See what happened to them, and see what's happening to us. I should add this to the cliche thread, those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it. HELLO, let's look in the mirror. Post.Of.The.Year. ^ Kap, that reminds me of the old Alan Moore quote: In fact, let us not mince words...the management is terrible! We've had a string of embezzlers, frauds, liars and lunatics making a string of catastrophic decisions. This is plain fact. But who elected them? It was you! You who appointed these people! You who gave them the power to make decisions for you! While I'll admit that anyone can make a mistake once, to go on making the same lethal errors century after century seems to me to be nothing short of deliberate. You have encouraged those malicious incompetents, who have made your working life a shambles. You have accepted without question their senseless orders. All you had to say was "No." You have no spine. You have no pride. You are no longer an asset to the company.
  23. Found it! Tennyson's "In Memoriam: A.H.H." Thanks for the help Soxy.
  24. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 06:43 PM) Off the top of my head, maybe Thomas Lovel-Beddos? Or maybe he's too Gothic. I'll try and dig out my Norton to thumb through. . . He's one of the big names, I know that -- cuz he made a survey book in high school for Brit Lit.
