Is this off-season the time to add a cheap 1b?

With the glut on the upcoming FA market...? Or play Abreu/Delmonico/Hayes there?

Available first basemen include Alonso, Morrison, Hosmer, the resurgent Mitch Moreland, Lucas Duda and Mark Reynolds, all of whom are OPSing at least .824 this season. Bad timing for Carlos Santana to be in the midst of the worst season of his career, with his free agency surely affected by this glut and the prospect of him signing a one-year make-good deal likelier by the week.

2) Brewers have seven potential outfielders, any interest? Who would they want in return from the Sox? Kahnle?

Ryan Cordell (who is crushing at Triple-A Colorado Springs and adds to the plethora of Brewers outfielders – him, Brinson, Ryan Braun, Domingo Santana, Hernan Perez, Keon Broxton, Brett Phillips – that will, at some point, warrant a trade.)

3) Finally, the Rangers could be a landing spot for Frazier...they need another bat, Beltre's battled health problems and age, can also DH and play 1B along with Gallo. Profar has struggled this year, as well as Napoli.

I wouldn't mind signing Santana to a 3 year deal...but otherwise, we have Abreu for 2 more years and we just drafted like 7 first basemen.

Of all the things we need, or potential moves to make, adding a free agent mediocre first baseman is pretty far down my list.

Normally i'd say this would be a good time to sign and flip one of these guys for assets at the deadline, but there doesn't seem to be any market for them right now. It's gotten bad enough that the A's are considering re-signing Alonso rather than trading him, because the return wouldn't be enough.

We've got Abreu and Davidson and Delmonico, our 1B/DH situation will work itself out.

Good research but no. Sox already have too many guys that profile as 1B\DH types.

Yes and no. Avi will stay in right or be traded.

Davidson at third. Basically, we're only talking Abreu, Delmonico, Hayes and Asche. I guess you could include Willy.

Cabrera will be long gone.

Santana might be worth it if the price is right for 1-2 years and Delmonico/Asche/W.Garcia/Hayes all flopped.

Could use a couple more veterans from winning teams to pair with youngsters.

According to all the stats, Brandon Belt might be the only player at that position worth it for his defense. Everyone else pretty run of the mill over there. Mauer actually rates #2-3 in most defensive categories.

We already have a relatively inexpensive and good first baseman in Abreau, and we have more potential first baseman in the minors.

Right now I don't see the room for another 1B type.

Realistically we're looking at something like this next year in the corners:

3B: Davidson/Delmonico

1B: Abreu

LF: Willy/Delmonico

RF: Avi

DH: Delmonico/Willy/Davidson

And this assumes we don't add a major league ready outfielder between now and opening day 2018. Now, a case can be made that Willy hasn't done enough to earn a full-time look in 2018, but still have a few other guys to mix and match with between Tilson, Engel, & maybe even Hayes. Just doesn't like a spot you worry about right now unless the player comes cheap with significant upside. Way too early to pay market rate for production.

Pedro Alvarez !

Abreu is our 1bman

May God have mercy on our souls.

Adding a good fielding, left handed hitting first baseman like Hosmer and moving Abreu to DH improves the defense, improves the offense, and helps keep Abreu healthy.

Improving the defense at 1B also improves the defense of the SS and third baseman, as many of their potential throwing errors are eliminated and even converted to outs.

Nah. No one on that list can be expected to be good for more than the next couple seasons.

I'm a defense first guy most of the time anyway, but I strongly believe that most people undercut the value of a good defensive 1st baseman. How many errors, and ultimately runs did Konerko save over Thomas at 1st over the years. Guys like Jim Spencer and Mike Squires were big time error and run savers too.

I understand that having a big bat can be important at first, but saving a few runs given up can be more valuable than a few a few extra RBI's, especially to a pitching staff. I just don't subscribe to the idea of just throwing anyone over at first because it's "easy".

Hosmer will be 28-31 if he signs a four year deal for, let's say, $70 million...although talk now after these last two months is that he's going to cost more than that. Will probably get at least five years, too.

At any rate, the point was signing an undervalued (leftover one, due to glut of options on the market), not someone close to peak value. A team like the Yankees or Red Sox will be more interested.

Santana might be the only one that fits that description. He's not a good defender, but he could always hit for power and put up some strong walk numbers.

Given what he will likely get in free agency and the actual value he would add, Hosmer might be the worst player they could sign. The only thing that's changed from this year compared to last is a little better luck on batted balls. Also, Hosmer is not very good defensively, as in, just as bad if not worse than Abreu.

We absolutely do not want to be the sucker that gives Hosmer a big FA deal.

Honestly, the only ex Royal I would consider would be Cain (FA market)...but he's hit well enough the last month or so his value is coming up to the point where he's no longer a bargain.

That's with the caveat we aren't planning to stick Moncada or Anderson in CF, which is far from assured.

Good time to pick up Michael Saunders for free and see if they can get him hot in June/July/August, then flip him.

He'd have to play CF though, although perhaps they can find an early taker for Melky and clear a spot. Would have an obvious effect on Leury (could be traded), Engel and zwilly Garcia.

Pretty shocking the Phillies even signed him, but he was really good most of last season offensively.

Idk I think I'd rather play who we have already. And a Melky deal could mean Delmonico comes up.

They're not going to just throw him out there...he's played 24 career games in the outfield in the minors, and only 4 in LF. Also, won't move Avi.

They've put guys like Hanson and WGsrcia out in CF for a few games, but it would be surprising if they brought him up to play LF everyday after playing so much 3b.

Saunders had big offensive numbers and could get hot in a hurry. Leury might be traded...Delmonico' snot going anywhere, and he's not hitting 850-900+ and forcing a Melky trade.

A 779 career guy in the minors translates to 725ish, and that's not good enough for a subpar defender on a corner. And he would still get to play LF for 30-45 games at the end of the season regardless.

I was thinking about Moustakas yesterday. With Frazier leaving, not much in the pipeline for 3B talent, Moose would make some sense as a glove first guy that can provide some pop and bring some more balance to the lineup with a LH bat and has a track record in the division. IF the money is right, I would value him more than Cain with the guys that the Sox have that can play in the system.

CF: How about a cheap 1B this offseason?

Last time I checked, SoxTalk was not the Sox GM...lol.

At any rate, do we really need a separate thread for Saunders?

Is SoxTalk also content with Abreu's defense at 1b? If Delmonico and Hayes aren't going to be considerably better, they probably need to look outside the organization, unless you think Avi can make the transition successfully to 1B? And the fact of the matter is that Abreu and Avi both will likely be gone after 2019, yes?

Now it's possible Sheets is ready to play there in 2020, but would you be willing to put Vegas odds on him starting at 1b Opening Day that season?
