May 31, 20187 yr Yeah I'm not really interested in reverting to middling 80+ win "moral victory" teams that have no championship potential. Real longterm winners take time to build. They aren't retooled. Like it or not, 2005 was lightning in a bottle and a bunch of us drank some major KW koolaid.

May 31, 20187 yr why does 49 vs. 65 wins even friggin' matter? Last place is last place. win/loss is not going to be a good metric for whether this team is better long term or worse this season. It's about evaluating who can perform on this roster at a major league level medium term. If we find out Gio and Fulmer aren't suitable, we move on faster with more info.

I blame the front office for not turning 80-win teams into 95 winners especially in this weakened division. Some people think the tank/rebuild is only way to go. I contend you put a .500 team together and then have the front office acquire the right pieces for a change and you win consistently. I don't personally think you have to win 50-60 games for 5 seasons in order to build WS winners. There is the "put together a decent team and let the GM actually earn his salary by turning 80 into 95" way as well. That requires some $$ though.

Take a 65/70 win team and remove their #1 and #5 starter, a key middle reliever, 2 starting OFs, a starting catcher, plus other key players at other times and do you expect to see?

May 31, 20187 yr Of course we are going to stink - we have had TERRIBLE starting pitching - some of the worst I've ever seen since I've been a Sox fan. Even guys like Danny Wright and Carlos Castillo weren't this bad. With Anderson's offensive resurgence, flashes of Moncada's future, Abreu's career year type stats, Davidson's power stroke and Kopech/Eloy being ahead of schedule, I don't understand how people can't see that once we get some major league caliber pitching in the mix our record is going to massively improve.

May 31, 20187 yr Folks, like it or not, this is what intentional losing looks like. I, for one, am taking it in stride this season. Still love the Sox, and I'm excited for when the minor league guys are finally up, be it later this season or next year (or further down the road in some cases).

I hardly ever say statniks any more. I say the stat people or stat lovers. Check my posts and you won't find "statnik" very often. I think I might have put it once fairly recently. I am not against all advanced stats. It just drives me crazy though that the traditional stats still determine entry in the Hall of Fame (pitching wins, losses, ERA) and hitting stats (BA, HR totals, RBI) and dominate baseball broadcasts yet they mean nothing to the stat people. It's all about WAR and certainly pitching wins mean nothing nowadays to the stat lovers.
