Sox have team meeting after game

What we're seeing now with this Sox team is what a 55-60 win season looks like.  A few highs, more lows, and a few dear-God-this-is-bad lows.

It amazes me how this team gets in long stretches where it loses just about every night. Loss after loss. 48-50 wins, baby. If the Sox are going to be this bad, at least they could tell RR to stop with the bunting BS. This team follows Sabes. It must make Hahn cringe when RR calls for the bunt.

  • what an awful franchise.

  • Ok greg, remind them they get paid.  I’m sure that will put them on a roll

  • Say what you want about Tyler Chatwood but  who would you rather have on the White Sox, Chatwood, Fulmer or Giolito?

If you know it is a bad team, why would that amaze you?  That literally makes no sense.

During the meeting, was a seance performed in order to heal Avi, Leury, Smith and Delmonico?  Because inserting actual MLB fielders at a couple positions might not hurt the cause.

I don't know. I guess I'm not used to this franchise dropping games in droves like this.

Again, you are watching this team be awful, yet you are surprised they are awful?  That makes zero sense.

This is probably the best post in the entire thread.  Good players will get this team playing better quicker than any meeting.

They had some bad teams in the years they were "going for it" as well.

Is that your fault, or the teams? We always hear about the Cubs and Astros.

Astros:

56-106

55-107

51-111

Cubs:

61-101

66-96

73-89

I still think the Sox finish with between 55-60 wins this season. Not sure what people thought this was going to look like.

That's great that those teams had those records.

Anyways here's where the projections were for this White Sox team:

538: 70 wins

Pecota: 73 wins

Vegas: started at 68, got up to 71 wins

Fangraphs: 65 wins

They're on pace for 49 wins.

They've certainly underachieved and not a lot of people expected them to be this bad. Again, to say so is rewriting history.

Excellent post dealing in facts. Good work.

Yeah I'm not really interested in reverting to middling 80+ win "moral victory" teams that have no championship potential. Real longterm winners take time to build. They aren't retooled. Like it or not, 2005 was lightning in a bottle and a bunch of us drank some major KW koolaid.

Posting "facts" about projections from 538, Pecota, Vegas, and Fangraphs is definitely "excellent." Those guys play the games, that's for sure.

why does 49 vs. 65 wins even friggin' matter? Last place is last place. win/loss is not going to be a good metric for whether this team is better long term or worse this season. It's about evaluating who can perform on this roster at a major league level medium term. If we find out Gio and Fulmer aren't suitable, we move on faster with more info.

It certainly is a awful franchise. But  the franchise is making nothing but money for this ownership. I read yesterday that the White Sox are 29th in team payroll. Oakland  is the only team with a lower payroll.  Forbes Magazine has said that the White Sox franchise has a gross income of $260 million dollars. With this low payroll JR and his investors are making some serious money here with this horrendous team.

Then why do you cheer for said franchise?

I don't know, Hibbs. I blame the front office for not turning 80-win teams into 95 winners especially in this weakened division. Some people think the tank/rebuild is only way to go. I contend you put a .500 team together and then have the front office acquire the right pieces for a change and you win consistently. I don't personally think you have to win 50-60 games for 5 seasons in order to build WS winners. There is the "put together a decent team and let the GM actually earn his salary by turning 80 into 95" way as well. That requires some $$ though.

Take a 65/70 win team and remove their #1 and #5 starter, a key middle reliever,  2 starting OFs, a starting catcher, plus other key players at other times and do you expect to see?

we are less than half of one season into 50-60 game winner territory.

Funny how when you like the numbers, you stop being condescending and insulting towards "statniks".

Ha ha, and those "facts" are projections based on previous stats by "statniks".

74-88 is a bad baseball team. 48 to 58 wins is a disgrace, but in our case I 'll take it. Next year we need to see a team that can approach .500.

Of course we are going to stink - we have had TERRIBLE starting pitching - some of the worst I've ever seen since I've been a Sox fan. Even guys like Danny Wright and Carlos Castillo weren't this bad.

With Anderson's offensive resurgence, flashes of Moncada's future, Abreu's career year type stats, Davidson's power stroke and Kopech/Eloy being ahead of schedule, I don't understand how people can't see that once we get some major league caliber pitching in the mix our record is going to massively improve.

Aren't you a self-proclaimed "baseball aficionado"?

Folks, like it or not, this is what intentional losing looks like. I, for one, am taking it in stride this season. Still love the Sox, and I'm excited for when the minor league guys are finally up, be it later this season or next year (or further down the road in some cases).

I hardly ever say statniks any more. I say the stat people or stat lovers. Check my posts and you won't find "statnik" very often. I think I might have put it once fairly recently. I am not against all advanced stats. It just drives me crazy though that the traditional stats still determine entry in the Hall of Fame (pitching wins, losses, ERA) and hitting stats (BA, HR totals, RBI) and dominate baseball broadcasts yet they mean nothing to the stat people. It's all about WAR and certainly pitching wins mean nothing nowadays to the stat lovers.

The difference being a lot of injuries happened.
