June 6, 20187 yr From that link on Maldonado: Kelvin Maldonado is a 2018 SS/IF with a 6-0 160 lb. frame from Santa Isabel, PR who attends Puerto Rico BB Academy. Nice athletic build, very projectable physically. 6.54 runner, has very solid actions on defense, moves to the ball with light feet and smooth balanced footwork, easy athletic actions, has a quick release and makes accurate throws, played very well on the left side in games and showed better arm strength in games than in drills. Right handed hitter, tall straight stance, hits from a still start with limited lower half use, opposite field oriented swing but did turn on one ball well in games, has hitting tools when he lets the barrel go but tended to get too mechanical in his approach, has the physical tools to continue to improve. Defense and speed will carry him until his bat comes around.
June 6, 20187 yr Sounds like he has good defense and speed, but is lacking with the bat. Not a bad lotto ticket. From the three HS guys this year and Sam Abbott last year it seems like Hostetler likes guys who have other tools but need to develop their hit tool. Edited June 6, 20187 yr by GenericUserName

I would think HS players with good hit tool and + on other tools would go early in the draft, and HS players with good hit tool but average on other tools will not be as projectable. So at this point you would hope to have players who are + on other tools and develop their hit tool.

June 6, 20187 yr Carranza is a RHP from Azusa Pacific, which is a school we know Hostetler personally scouted this year. Carranza is a tranfer from Oregon and last year we picked several guys who transferred from bigger to smaller programs. Carranza is also ranked 166 in the pipeline rankings so he is well regarded and would probably need an above slot deal but he is also a junior so he wouldn't need a huge deal because if he turns it down he loses all leverage next year. His scouting report says he sits around 92 with his fastball but the video I saw had him sitting 94-96 from an easy delivery though the fastball is pretty straight. He has a good k/9 but he doesn't have great control so he walks too many guys and gives up more hits than he should, though he doesn't give up many home runs even though his home park looks like a launching pad based on his teammates stats. He seems like the perfect candidate for our pitching development to try to get his command under control and maybe add a cutter so his main fastball isn't so straight. He also has more of a projectable frame than you would anticipate for a college guy, so his stuff could even add another tick if he fills out in a better strength program.
