Smith to catch Giolito

Featured Replies

Good. Anything that can help Giolito get back on track I'm all in favor of.

Wouldn't that be something if Giolito suddenly figured it out and the damn answer was Kevan fricken Smith? I know that's not going to happen, but it would be something if it did.

Smith is the Sox Johnny Bench. A sight for sore eyes.

Smith should catch every day

Castillo and Narvaez rank 87th and 89th out of 91 catchers in MLB for pitch framing. And it's not like Castillo wasn't known to be one of the worst pitch framers in MLB when they signed him. I'm not sure what they were thinking.

On top of those two, you also have Alfredo's 3 games. Who was basically the fat chick you blacked out drunk, woke up next to and have no idea how you wound up in bed with her. The story you keep to yourself and take to the grave with ya. lol. Disaster.

Weren't his numbers actually good last year when it came to framing? I remember being one of things most talked about on here.

Edit: He was ranked 11th best from what I can find.

lol I mean, he is the 4th catcher. You can't really expect a ton.

Yes he was good...makes you wonder about the coaching these guys are getting

Might have to do with the guys on the mound. Hard to frame a pitch when you miss your locations consistently.

I would bet on this, Giolito and Fulmer were enough to drag any decent framing stats from a catcher down. At least Castillo's #s because Narvaez is just bad.

I dont have last year's numbers. If that's true, I think last year was an anomaly, not his performance this year. Because he's historically been known as terrible at pitching framing.

2014 article while on the Cubs:   look no further than BP’s projections on pitch-framing for 2014. According to the model, Castillo projects to be the worst framing catcher in all of baseball next year. In fact, he projects to be so bad that his framing will be worth nearly -19 runs.

2016 article while on the d-backs: Comparatively speaking, Castillo is considered one of the worst pitch framers in baseball, and the numbers back that up. According to Stat Corner, only four other catchers with at least 5,000 pitches caught were worse at getting extra strikes for their pitches.

Side question... If MLB goes to electronic strike zones, is pitch framing no longer a stat?

No, it wouldn't be. Because then it doesn't matter how/where the catcher catches it.
