I don't see why unless they felt there was no longer a chance they could sign Manny, making Alonso available (I really doubt they'll deal Abreu).

He would destroy our park.

Hmm, don't like that thought.

Back to 3B and reclaim the nickname "E5."

Yep in which case they should have just signed Cruz then for cheaper.

Who knows, maybe this is their plan B and they go after Haniger as well?  I would be stunned (and livid) if their plan B is simply to get Encarnacion if they miss on the big guys.

I agree, I would rather stay the course than add just to add and if not move the needle, encarnacion is 35, wouldn’t be a long term fit here

Unless they can get Haniger too as part of a trade with Seattle, acquiring just Encarnacion makes no sense to me.

It would have to be a contract buy to get something of value, right?

We've got Abreu and Yonder...unless we don't land Manny or Harper and plan on flipping Abreu

No way they would get Haniger to take on one year of Edwin.

or what if they get Manny, and then make a 3-way deal with something like this:

White Sox get:  Encarnacion, Haniger

Mariners get:  Cease, two Astros prospects

Astros get:  Abreu

What about Mallex Smith?

Not that it wouldn’t be a fair trade, but I would really hate giving up Cease.

I'd say that is more realistic for sure.

That would be terrible.

Does anyone know if Encarnacion and Machado are close or have some sort of friendship? If so, this idea could make sense.

This offseason:

- Sox trade for Encarnacion and get a prospect or two for taking on his salary.

- Sox trade Abreu for a prospect or two.

- Encarnacion is another tool to help recruit Machado to the Sox.

Alonso at 1B, Encarnacion at DH next season.

Next offseason:

- Encarnacion departs via free agency.

- The Sox bring back Abreu as a free agent.

- Alonso's option vests, bringing him back to the Sox for another season.

Alonso at 1B, Abreu at DH in 2020.

While this seems far fetched, I guess it isn't entirely impossible.

And who I'd rather have anyway. Fills the biggest hole in the offense provided the Sox get Manny.

I think this Encarcion tweet has to be compete “these fucks are crazy” misdirection unless like fathom pointed out somehow Abreu is on the move.

I think they are just checking on everyone, even if they have no plans to really acquire them.

Not saying it wouldn't hurt, but I can't see Mariners giving up Haniger without getting some pitching prospects back.  With Dunning's elbow and Hansen's yips, unfortunately Cease is really the only one with significant trade value.

So the White Sox give up Abreu and a top 30 prospect in baseball to get back Encarnacion and Haniger?

The most probable scenario.
