Because the sox have the best offer on the table and that is the one thing sox won't do is 2 year opt out. And they shouldn't.

Neither should the Padres...they’re in the exact same position as us but without the massive financial flexibility.  The juice is simply not worth the squeeze for them if they’re only guaranteed two years of Manny.

I’m not as against opt outs like others. The Sox were possibly willing to trade for him last year just to get him in the org and comfortable. If you had to do that now it wouldn’t be ideal but at least you give yourself a good shot and he doesn’t go to another team where you don’t get any shot at all. If Manny really preferred early opt outs and thought he would get it he would have a bigger market out there.

The part where reality is blindly ignored.

What? The reality that the only reason that either player is even considering the Sox is because their desired teams aren't even close on dollars? The Padres are in a similar position to the Sox and if you're being objective about it, have the greatest collection of young talent in baseball. Add in San Diego's climate, and it is easy to see why they're a more desirable location for those guys than the Sox. The Yankees are the Yankees, and no matter what is said publicly you can never count them out.  Out of all of the suitors, the Sox are probably the least desirable location. Philly has closer proximity to winning and a young budding ace on their staff, and San Diego has nice weather and more talent. If you don't put on the silver and black goggles, it is easy to see why the Sox haven't signed one of them yet, and aren't likely to in the future.

Most posters here are thinking with their heart, and not their brain.

The Padres the past 10 years in payroll:

2018 - 25th

2017 - 28th

2016 - 16th

2015 - 22nd

2014 - 21st

2013 - 26th

2012 - 30th

2011 - 28th

2010 - 29th

2009 - 29th

IN 2010, the Padres nearly had a payroll that was lower than the $ Manny is asking for per year lol.

They have never spent more than 112 million in a season. They've spent over 100 million twice in their franchises history.

Nothing indicates the San Diego Padres can compete, salary wise, with the White Sox.

I don't think the Sox have ever eclipsed a $130M payroll so they're not much better.

Why do you keep citing the climate my man? Baseball is a summer sport. No one is suffering. Chicago is a great summer city. If he was signing on to play football and wanted to be warm, sure... this would make sense.

The reality is Jack, that the White Sox are being considered because they have been the most involved and they have stated that would be the case for TWO YEARS. You act like the Sox wouldn't be interested if the Yankees or Dodgers were involved? That's nonsense. The White Sox had no clue that the Yankees would be out when they circled and targeted this free agent class.

They haven't signed because they haven't gotten the offer they want from ANYONE. It has nothing to do with the White Sox, or the weather in San Diego.

It's been reported multiple times Manny wants nothing to do with west coast. Just saying.

Manny also visited all the other serious suitors and forced the Padres’ GM to come to Miami.  That should tell us everything we need to know about his desire to play in San Diego despite that fanfuckingtastic weather!!

Once again, climate is irrelevant. Chicago summers are plenty warm, and there’s no baseball in the winter

You must have missed 2018, where winter lasted until May 20th. A few years prior it was snowing on May 17th.

Over the past decade more often than not Winter isn't truly over until at least April 30th. Last year it wasn't over until damn near Memorial day.

Honestly, just seeing that IDK why anyone would sign there. They have never even been in the top half of the league in payroll. They aren't a franchise with cash rich owners either. The Padres are what they are - big spenders not being one.

I was going to say, April is bad, night games in May are still rough, along with September. June, July and August are great though. Playing on the road in the rest of the midwest or out East is similar.

But what about April!?!   It’s so fucking cold then!  I’d rather play for the fucking Rays than have to endure 12 games in a nipply Chicago April!?!

The White Sox had TOP FIVE payrolls in baseball. What are you talking about Jack?

2013 - 8th

2012 - 10th

2011 - 5th

2010 - 7th

2009 - 12th

2008 - 5th

2007 - 5th

2006 - 4th

How can you even compare these two teams? One team has been in the top 10, 6 of the last 12 years. The other team has never been in the top half of the league.
