The Sox are not a strategic organization and haven't been since KW was hired. It's all tactical stuff, not strategic. There's no philosophy, just various ideas and compromises given certain circumstances. It's feeling things out and reacting to situations. Let's 'take a flier' on this and that guy and see what assets we can move in a trade that'll generate some drama. In light of a coherent long term vision, or a vague sense of such a thing, we'd be a lot happier with the way this offseason has gone.

That was my exact thought. And now that the Giants signed Joc, we should see another team pop up tomorrow as interested in Conforto.

Yeah, but the Sox can't compete with the package that other teams may be willing to give. It's hard to see the Sox acquiring either player if there are multiple teams involved.

The Twins don't even want to spend, but the Sox offseason so far is pretty much begging and pleading for them to jump back in...especially with Cleveland seemingly looking to tear down.

Manaea is not going to cost that much.  Whether Hahn wants to push those chips in remain to be seen, but he has a history of trading for rentals with local ties.

And then there is this.  If we were going with what we have for RF, why not prioritize Miller at 2B at least?  Failing to add any left-handed hitting is yet another fireable offense after stating it being a priority.

Well, at least 2004-05 made sense in retrospect.  Go away from the bloated salaries of Maggs, El Caballo and Valentin to allocate the money across more guys.  Manufacturing runs at the top with Pods and Iguchi.  Two huge pitching additions the year before, with Contreras totally under the radar.  El Duque for leadership.  Dye and AJ at a massive discount.  Bullpen by committee with Hermanson, Takatsu, Jenks, Politte, Marte and Cotts.  Everett in the leadership mix as well.

All for $65 million, at least the Opening Day payroll.

Even still, the white Sox can either give out something big league ready (difficult to do this year) or they can give up something rather away…which has some chance of blossoming into something they wished they hadn’t given up.

No one credible has said a move isn’t happening though…at least from what I can tell.

Dude, just by being contrarian, they stumbled onto a market inefficiency WRT Pods and Iguchi.

Costs for pitching was suppressed, and the Bullpen had a collective synchronous career year.

Dye took a discount to be here based on the principle of him keeping his word, and AJP's value was suppressed after he had a tough year in SF. Neither of these things would happen today.

 

It was the alignment of good fortune, moreso than good design, in retrospect. Don't get me wrong, I will forever be happy with the WS win. But there was scant overall FO strategy that led to that banner.

Jesse Rogers is pretty credible. He works for the Sox flagship.
