2024: AL Central Thread

I think Cleveland has to have one of the worst collection of position players to ever get into the playoffs or win a division. Outside of Ramirez and Kwan, nobody on their team is even close to 2 fWAR. Their offense is as bad as the Sox in terms of wRC+ (they're 28th in baseball). But what keeps them afloat is that they're 2nd in clutch (while the Sox are 29th). That, their defense, and their bullpen being good is the difference between them and the 2025 White Sox.

That was the most Guardians way to win a game. 2 out walk, bloop, intentional walk, HBP. This has to be one of the most fortunate teams of all time.

Truly. I didn’t know that’s how they walked it off lol I just got the notification on my phone. Love it. Now hopefully the reds can wrap things up.

But they have been that way for the last decade or so...regardless of veteran or rookie managers like Francona and Vogt.

If only Sox fans could have Guardiams' fans "problems" in terms of playoff histories since the mid 90s.

https://champsorchumps.us/team/mlb/cleveland-guardians

9 times in the post season from 2007 onwards.

White Sox 3.

6/7 from 1995-2001

15 playoff appearances since the 1994 strike year.

White Sox=4, 5 if you go back one more year to 1993

Haha, I guess everything is perspective.  Now imagine being a fan of a team that has gone 162-324 over the last 3 seasons and doesn’t have a single player anywhere near as good as Jose Ramirez.  Sox fans should get the entire Tribune and Sun Times to air their complaints, not just one page.  🤣

I heard Eduardo Perez call Jose Ramirez a future ball of famer during one of their wild card series games. My first thought was...maybe he will be one in the future, but there's no way you can say that now. I go to his FanGraphs page to see that he already has 57 fWAR and probably has at least another 3 good years in him left. Unless he falls off the face of the earth, he's gonna be in the Hall. And Cleveland has constantly not spent money around him. I don't even know why he signed that extension with them. It was a discount and they're not spending the money they saved by signing him to it.

Next season, Ramirez is going to pass 300 HRs and 300 SBs. I'm going to guess there's less than 5 of those guys in MLB's history.

Checked. There's actually 8.

Player (HR/SB)
Barry Bonds (762/514)
Alex Rodriguez (696/329)
Willie Mays (660/339)
Andre Dawson (438/314)
Carlos Beltran (435/312)
Bobby Bonds (332/461)
Reggie Sanders (305/304)
Steve Finley (304/320)

Tigers are really well set up for next year if they can add a veteran closer to replace Finnegan.

Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark two of the top ranked hitters in the minors and both arriving next year.

However, Skubal Flaherty Mize could all be free agents at the end of 2026...

Do they really expect any new owner to have any more success than the current organization has had over the last few decades given their market size?  How many small market teams have been as successful as they have been?  And nobody say the Brewers until I see them advance in the playoffs....they're in the process of blowing a 2-0 series lead to the Cubs.

Maybe Guardians fans can take out a full page ad demanding that the Cleveland metro area be transformed into a large market.  Or an ad demanding that MLB fix their competitive balance issue.
