Good looking numbers...

This wasn't either of the top names people were mentioning/guessing, right?

Was this guy listed in any of the Rule 5 articles?

Exactly my question, haha.  Can’t remember if anyone had mentioned him as a top option, or an option at all.

Curious why Brewers didn’t protect him, his numbers aren’t ugly

He was the second name listed in BA's "Most LIkely to be Picked" article.

Shane Smith, RHP, Brewers
Smith pitched sparingly at Wake Forest due to Tommy John surgery before signing with the Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 2021. At 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, the 24-year-old Smith threw a career-high 94.1 innings in 2024, posting a 3.05 ERA with 113 strikeouts and 29 walks (mostly for Double-A Biloxi with five relief outings for Triple-A Nashville). Smith split time between starting and the bullpen, pitching off a fastball that sits 92-96 mph and can reach 98. He mixes in an average curveball and slider, a repertoire that likely plays better in short relief outings than having to get through a lineup multiple times.

A starter would’ve been better but it’s nice that this guy is still relatively young with good stuff.  It shouldn’t be all that difficult to keep him on the roster.

I would let him compete for a starting rotation spot in spring training

If that does not work can always put him in the bullpen

Looks like he is a guy who fell through the cracks. The injury history, plus the trying to get him ramped back up mean he is behind.

It's the Rule 5 draft. If any of these guys were sure fire starters at the next level they would have been protected. This is as good as you are going to get.

Eh I'd just start off with the label "Swingman/Long reliever". Let the roster sort out where he winds up, if he winds up looking like a starter great, if not then a reliever, and if someone gets hurt or gets shelled early he's stretched out for 4-5 innings.

I’m not complaining.  Looks like a better pick than You Don't Mess with the Shane Drohan.

How is Michael Fulmer rule 5 eligible

Once in a while you get a Johan Santana.

This happened 23 years ago tomorrow.

More recently, Santander and Canha as well.

I'm good with this selection.

He looks interesting. There’s nothing wrong with putting any of these ML-ready guys in the bullpen, without crowning them as a career reliever. It’s a good way to get the feet wet in the major leagues.
