Hawk is 100% accurate when he said 30 years ago your bullpen is only as good as your offense. And Bill James was right 40 years ago when he said 1 run games are basically crap shoots. Good teams score runs in bunches when the starter has nothing and pad the lead so the least talented pitchers on the roster can't even think about blowing it most nights. That's just how it goes. I get what you're reacting to, it's just really not the root issue. I will be very pleasantly surprised if Vargas turns into a legit mlb starter. Oh I know but even having half a lineup that can maybe put up a .700 OPS is an improvement from last year. Would be great if Teel and Montgomery were solid pieces in the future as well.
