I mean can we get a few weeks of decency before we start taking victory laps?

I'll sign the Sosa-Vargas Compact if Vargas fans acknowledge Sosa's larger sample size of growth.

Kind of like giving him more of a chance before declaring him an awful player.

He had 650 awful MLB plate appearances with the Dodgers and Sox before his last 10 game hot streak.  How many plate appearances is giving a guy a chance to you?

And now he's had like 40 hot ones. I mean, he's still negative WAR for his career. Let's hold up on the "gotchas".

I will go with longer term trends vs shorts spurts as being more relevant typically,  but sure.

Miguel Vargas now on pace to exceed  2 fWAR and Jake Burger is optioned to the minor leagues.

“On pace”…  famous last words.  Sheets was on pace to be a star.  Now he’s on pace for his usual shitty season.  The larger sample size usually reigns supreme in the end.

More than one season of at bats, that's for sure. Players can improve year over year.

Sure. One season determines their career.

Only if it's a season marred by injury or fatigue. One good season will need a 2nd, and then a 3rd to confirm that Guantanamo shouldn't be expecting a GM and 3B.

Shrug. Vargas has actually looked pretty darn good the last couple weeks. 2 WAR isn't exactly a huge number or anything, but getting that out of him would be nice. IDGAF about Sheets, totally different player and circumstance.

Vargas is at 713 career MLB plate appearances.  That is over a year of PA’s.  His career line is currently:

.183 / .280 / .316 / .596

I hope to see you back here in a couple months and we can reassess.

Are you actually expecting or just “on-pacing” 2 WAR based on 10 games of plate appearances?

It isn’t the WAR number that is all that questionable.  It’s the limited sample size.

Huh? He is currently on pace for 2 fWAR, which is what I said. Almost all do that has come in this small sample of him being really good, yes. No one is denying that. He could forget how to bat again tomorrow. But he's hitting and outside of a blunder today, he's been excellent in the field which wasn't really expected. It's a positive development - enjoy it for a millisecond man. It's ok.

No no, it is absolutely a good week that does.

Notice how he didn’t actually specify cutoff?

”More than one season of at bats, that's for sure. Players can improve year over year.”

So how many seasons is that?  More than one season could be two or several…

No, I’m not.  I’m just not buying it.  I hope to be wrong though.

I really hope the guy succeeds.  As of right now that deal is a nuclear falllout of a disaster unless Vargas turns out to be a useable player.  It would be nice to get at least a guy who you can roster without needing to keep adding old timey utility players to play instead.  If this thing is ever going to happen, we need to start winning in the minutia of these kinds of deals, because we literally have one major asset left to cash in, and if that is only if Robert starts to act like Luis Robert.

Sure. I'll never write a player of until we see a couple of seasons.

You can trumpet the doom as early as you want.

You are so mad he could possibly be putting it together.

It would be excellent if he could become a bona fide contributing player to the organization.

Time will tell.

Dodgers burned through his options because he was continually bad after getting multiple opportunities. Let's not pretend that he hasn't gotten ample opportunity. Developement isn't linear so of course he could sustain this, but his track record suggests otherwise.
