In that regard that makes JR about the worst of the worst. Start factoring in things like market size and he looks even worst. Other owners only take action when an owner is accused of harassment or racist comments. If some franchise wants to be the Washington Generals the other owners don't care. So there really aren't many bad owners in their eyes. Sports are a weird business. I want someone to make a fortune in another business then spend all that further to make my team a winner. Which is why when the Sox won the World Series, Konerko gave the ball to future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas, and not to Jerry...
November 1, 2025Nov 1 The players don’t control how much the owner budgets to drafting, development, analytics, INT scouting, or to the major league payroll. The players have next to no impact on team construction. Every successful rebuild requires outside acquisitions somewhere. Perhaps the owner isn’t responsible for individual wins on a day to day basis, but to suggest ownership has no impact on winning is silly.

How much credit do you give JR for those Bulls trophies? We're agreeing the worst owner of sports has seven combined championships in two sports.

Sure, the owner gets that honor. But fan perception is that the owner is furniture who spends money. When a team wins, the fans will politely boo the owner at the parade. When they don't, fans actively call for a sale. Peruse any Mariners chat, and, while not the majority, there is a definite sample of people who barrel in and yell that the Mariners will never win until they get a new owner who spends money. And they've got Julio Rodriguez under control through 2034 on a $119M contract, Raliegh through 2031 on a $105M contract, and Luis Castillo through 2028 on a $108M contract. The Mariners have 8 top 100 prospects in MLB rankings, and Bleacher Report just ranked their minor league system #1 in the game this September.
November 2, 2025Nov 2 I agree that fans generally don’t credit owners for winning, but that doesn’t mean owners never get recognized. I’m not sure I even know what’s being argued here, which is what I get for butting in in the middle of it lol.
November 2, 2025Nov 2 I think it is fair to expect an owner to recruit a front office that can put together a winning program. So that's basically the baseline of competency for me. He has consistently failed at that for decades. He's failed at what I believe is the minimum to pass.

As someone who lived through it, basketball revolved around the big center. Michael changed the game 180 degrees, and no one really saw it coming.
