Keith Law Top 100

Featured Replies

For those interested, here were some interesting ones.

1. Konnor Griffin --- this one hurts since we had a shot at him but went with Hagen.

30. Montgomery
44. Bonemer
58. Hagen Smith
66. Billy Carlson
95. Schultz

Keith likes the position prospects a little more than others in some areas, but his pitching grades aren't promising for a team who has no pitching.

Current and future starting pitching sure looks bleak. This new and improved rebuild is not gonna work either unless they fix that.

This isn't true at all.

You would know and I am happy to hear that....and very happy to be wrong.

I have just not seen anything written nationally that is complimentary of our pitching.

We HAVE to get Schultz and Smith back on track to get it fixed.  Those are two huge pieces of this puzzle that could literally move the timeline forward or backward based on what they do in the near future.

Keith Law just had a pretty glowing write-up on Hagen Smith. Towards the end of the season, he looked like the guy from Arkansas. Noah Schultz was pitching injured all year. Both still have top of the rotation upside and should be in the majors by Juneish. Tanner McDougal has ridiculous stuff and he's basically big league ready as well. Christian Oppor isn't far behind. The Sox also have back end options throughout the system and Ky Bush, Mason Adams, Drew Thorpe should all be options by midseason. They'll likely need to spend on pitching at some point but they have some pretty high upside dudes. It's a big year for them.

Thanks so much for the perspective. Prior to the 2025 season, I was very excited with what I thought the starting pitching staff would look like by the end of the year but that never materialized and soured me a bunch. If it happens in 2026 instead, then outstanding.

Taylor too, rotation-wise.

It's done.  Forget about it.  He's a reliever, it's over.

I guess.

Anyway, McDaniel has a less favorable opinion of our prospects:
Bonemer:  34
Schultz:  96
Carlson:  100
4 or 5 in his next 100 I believe

Our drafting team certainly has gotten a pass in all of the reshuffling.

We all thought Colson was dead and buried this time last year.  Let's calm down a little about the arms.

Not according to Getz in his podcast interview. Door is still open.

Good stuff here.

-Montgomery will move quickly

-Gives a really interesting Billy Carlson Arm Bar talk at about 2:15, does call him one of the 2 best defensive MiLB SSs as a teenager.

-Good at the top but lack depth, graduations hit hard

-Rebuilt Colson's swing

-Need more pitching, not enough depth

-Falls off sharply after top 8/9 prospects

-More hits on Kenny Williams interference

-Player development improvement

-Hired some great people, but haven't had many successes yet

-Not many big player dev wins yet, such as big pop ups from unexpected guys.  Oppor might become that, thought might not be a starter.

Good discussion of lack of depth in the farm system, especially pitching.  We missed on some pretty high pitching picks. (and punting takes its toll – that’s me, not them)

Law ranks system  #8;  #20 per ESPN

That's why I think they would give Baldwin lots of runway to get it right at a position. He would be such a big victory out of the 12th round.

Just remembered the story that supposedly Chris Getz forced the pick of Hagen Smith over the scouts pick of Konnor Griffin.

Having a top heavy system is fine if you have a constant supply of boom/bust type prospects coming out of your international and domestic scouting operations. Hopefully Getz can continue to expand those areas.

I get it this time instead of when Hahn did it in 23 and took Jacob Gonzalez. The 2024 Draft was Getz first draft, makes sense (somewhat) that a new GM would make the pick, especially when it was such a high pick. I do wish he listened to the scouts though.

I would the farm system looks good considering that we're 2 year into a farm rebuild. Kevin Goldstein when he was at Baseball Prospectus said that it takes 3 to 4 years to rebuild a farm system. I agree that the one thing hold the farm back to having some serious depth, and some more upside is the lack of a good international operation that routinely turns out interesting prospects. Getz hired his INTL staff back in 2024, and their first class won't be until next year. One of the things that make the Dodgers and Brewers systems so good, is that routinely sign premium athletes in the international market and are able to develop them.

I am still sad we didn’t get any teams comp balance pick with trades this year.

I really don’t know how with mlb rules as they are we can ever have a “deep” farm.

Even with #1, we aren’t top budget right? Could have really used an overwhelming surplus to make sure we have ammunition for our World Series run after Roch arrives.

Thy could still acquire one but it’s tough because only the small market contenders trade them. Only way for Sox to have a deep farm is by significant progress and consistent additions in international market.

Yeah and it can only be traded once
