Very interesting Sox in the Basement Podcast/Interview with dudes commissioned by the White Sox in 2024 to conduct a study on hitting. Some of the focus was on fixable issues in amateurs and post-hype players.

Quote

In 2024 the White Sox commissioned a biomechanical study to identify adjustments that could make better hitters. The results shared with them a year ago has the potential help develop better hitters, identify draft targets and find "fixable" players in free agency and the trade market. Are we already seeing some impact? We sit down with two of the guys behind the project, Alex Yeager and Devan Joshi, at Cork & Kerry At The Park to hear all about this surprising focus from the front office.

Interesting, but who did they fix? Pretty much everyone they brought in , except maybe Tauchman, did exactly as poor or worse than ever, and Tauchman was such a revaluation the Sox didn't even tender him a contract.

Are you seriously asking this? Vargas and Colson, for starters. But they also talk about the statistical department using the conclusions to target amateurs and post-hype players they think could have easier fixes, like Billy Carlson, Kelenic, Pereira and Acuña.

In a question asked about who they FIXED, you gave four guys that haven't yet taken a swing in anger for the Chicago White Sox.

The original post clearly states that a focus was on amateurs and post-hype players. "Yeah, but who have they fixed?!?" Is a dumb question. But I gave the names of two players who had issues that they "fixed". Following up on the original intent, I then gave the names of players they've acquired, most probably guided by findings of this research, that they've talked about tweaking their mechanics.

I'm not sure what you're having a problem with.

Mostly that you didn't really answer the question, you asked the question you wanted to answer, and answered it instead, after catching a tone about the question daring to be asked in the first place.

Candidly speaking, most guys did pretty well last year, even the scrap heap signings like Tauchman, Slater, and the catcher I’m forgetting.  And most of the young guys saw significant jumps vs. PY or in the 2H.

Slater was league average with a .299 OBP. Thaiss was alright but it was all based on walks. Vaughn improved significantly when he went elsewhere. Tyalor, Rojas, Palacios, Mead, Amaya, Maton ,Noda, Dalbec, Jankowski were just as awful or more awful than they ever were.

Slater had a 137 wRC+ against LHP with the White Sox (the role we signed him for) and commanded a prospect in return that was an org top 20 guy.  Suggesting he was anything but a success is 100% not reality.  Vaughn was supposedly unwilling to listen to coaching while with us.  Most of the other guys you listed aren’t really major leaguers so not sure what that proves.  You conveniently left out all the young guys who performed well or improved like Montgomery, Sosa, Vargas, Teel, Baldwin, etc.

They didnt fix Vargas. Vargas has performed exactly in line with his projections from the day they acquired him. Not sure why people continue to sing the fixed Vargas praises.

Montgomery has only ever been in there system. They dont get credit for "fixing" something they created.

Was he better than you thought he would be? Did they fix him?

Yes they do. LOL. Internet guy doesn't get to deny reality exists for the rest of us.

The article said they would identify free agents and trade targets to fix. Which free agent or trade target did they actually fix? Hitting is hard. Expecting someone who can easily fix players is absolutely crazy.

Reality is going from an 2024 OPS+ of 98 to a 2025 of 100 is being "fixed", when he has a career average of.... wait for it... 100?  His actual OPS was .721 with a career average of.... .720.

Looks to me like they got exactly what they paid for to me, which is a good deal in recent years.

What article? I posted a podcast.

As for your question, are you actually implying that a team signs a baseball player and they instantly become "fixed"? I would think they would at least have to get in the batting cages and play a couple of games before that happened.

While we're on the subject, can you tell us about these teams who sign players and magically fix them as their pen comes off the contract?

Who had an OPS+ of 98 in 2024? Vargas wound up with an OPS+ of 45 on the season. Ray Ray doesn't like to take partial samples out of a season.

When the Sox acquired Vargas, his 2025 Projected WAR was 1.2 and his projected OPS+ was 102.

He finished at 1.3 and 101.

Just because some people like to overreact to 400 MLB at bats and decided that was who Miguel Vargas was for the rest of his career, doesn't mean that's actually what was expected of him. The Sox haven't gotten more out of Vargas, they got exactly what was expected out of him. Hardly a case of fixing a guy.
