Haven't been following have they been stressful innings mixed in or are they just really limiting him?

They could always take the Sale/Crochet route and call him up as a bullpen piece. Let him get his innings there.

He had a 30+ pitch inning in each of the last two starts. Sox philosophy with young pitchers seems to be that once a single inning's pitch count gets that high, you're playing with fire the rest of that game. And I don't know exactly how consistent this is from team to team, but I know the Sox are far from the only ones who are starting to focus on the high-pitch inning as a big injury concern.

If he can't handle it on his early 20s. Good luck with it over the next 6 years. Everyone was so scared about crochet and I said we needed to cut him loose and let him start. Some guys will become very durable and resilient pitching once every 5 days. You won't know until you try. Guys were living way more back in the day. 4 man rotations. Too many teams are scared tito let guys throw. You can't pitch 7 innings consistently unless you are allowed to let your arm build up to it.

If guys are taken out before 6 innings every start then when they are doing well and they try to go 7 and 8 they can't hack it because it's an anomaly. Good durable pitchers have themselves ready to pitch 110 pitches per game.

Smith is throwing like 3 innings in year 3. Maybe in 2 years he can qualify for a decision

I think ptatc also talked about how the physique build up was as important to teams how as “arm” fatigue.

I know we look at the old days of 300 innings and pitching every four days, but pitchers weren't going 100% for those outings on every pitch like they are today. They would rather have 100% of a pitcher for 80-90 pitches every five days, than 90% of them for 120 pitches ever four days. They also have relievers they are pushing out with stuff that puts everyone to shame from the good old days. It's a different game, with different physical asks. If we were still asking for the average 85mph fastball, I am sure these guys could handle it just as much as the old days. With the emphasis on speed, spin, and velocity, versus accuracy and endurance, we can't expect the same things.

I hear what you are saying. But it isn't helping pitchers stay healthy. Instead of throwing 95-97 every pitch just ease off and learn how to pitch. Throw where you are comfortable and hit your spots with more movement Maximum velocity isn't everything. Crochet sis at 96 instead of 100 like he used to throw as a RP. It's his comfort zone and he isn't hot now.

Maybe a guy like Hicks should slow down and gain some control.

Coming into the year the short outings were planned, I believe, with the idea of him being full throttle by season’s end (with the big league team).

Whether it’s a good idea, I don’t know. But I wouldn’t worry about the workload as much as how his stuff and command look.

At least Hagen is missing bats and people are struggling to make contact on him. Command continues to be an issue but he's still improving as compared to last year. Still expect him to be in Chicago at some point the next couple months. Dude needs to replace Kay....even if he can only pitch 4-5 innings per start.
