September 21Sep 21 Hou- 6 games left + 1 because they didn’t win the season series = 7 minus 3 games up in loss column equals 4Tex- 6 games left (we won the season series so we don’t add 1) 6 minus 2 games up in the loss column equals 4 Edited September 21Sep 21 by flavum

It can get complicated if it ends up being a 3 way tie where the Astros would end up winning the tiebreaker on aggregate head to head record. Edited September 21Sep 21 by chw42

September 21Sep 21 The best record Houston can currently end up with is 83-79. They have tie-breaker over the Sox. Thus the Sox need to get to 84 wins to finish ahead of Houston. Magic number = 4.The best record Texas can finish with is 84-78. The Sox hold the tie-breaker over Texas so they only have to tie them to win the WC. Thus the Sox need to get to 84 wins. Magic number = 4.
September 21Sep 21 Elimination numbers per MLB, I'm not trying to do the mathToronto 3 - Sox hold tiebreaker Houston 4 - see above We know the situation in the division.
September 21Sep 21 Baseball Reference and CBS Sports this morning prediction odds have the Sox and Guards tying for the Division of course with the Sox winning because of the tie breaker, I guess they think the Sox have the easier schedule but you still have to play the games and for me 1967 is still fresh in my mind.
September 21Sep 21 Just win. Win the first two against KC, and the magic number could be 1 or even 0 by then. But they should still be fighting for the division.
September 21Sep 21 I hope the Sox clinch the postseason spot when the A’s beat Astros late a Thursday night. Stay focused on the 2-seed.
September 21Sep 21 Author Will the Sox pop champagne when they clinch a playoff spot?Im thinking they might save the champagne celebration for a potential division title, but then what if that never occurs. Then no champagne celebration?

September 22Sep 22 Both Toronto and Baltimore down to 2 for their elimination and they have 2 more against each other.

If the Sox go .500, the Astros have to go perfect. By the way Houston are 2-9 against the mariners this year.On 9/20/2026 at 10:21 PM, JTB said:The best record Houston can currently end up with is 83-79. They have tie-breaker over the Sox. September 22Sep 22 Was also just thinking about this. An Astros surge will almost certainly land them in 1st place in the AL west. As long as we play .500, the AL west race for first really helps us in the wild card. For the Astros, to get in 1st it would require a Rangers loss. At that point, we'd finish 83-79. We win the tiebreaker Edited September 22Sep 22 by Colome's Hat
September 22Sep 22 In my mind the perfect night tonight is Sox, Rangers win. Guardians. Astros lose. First place. Magic number of 2 for the pos-season and 3 for the 2 seed. I’d prefer Texas in the post-season over Houston thus the Rangers win tonight.

September 23Sep 23 Baltimore and Toronto's magic numbers are both down to 1, so they could eliminate each other by splitting their doubleheader tomorrow.
