  • Hope all 4 of these guys involved ultimately have long and successful careers with this franchise.

Do you think all assets of a deal are equal?

  • I think that's harsh. He's young there's a lot of room to grow. Not comparing the 2 but I still remember that a rookie Dylan cease could not be trusted to pitch in game 3 of the playoffs. People wante

I’m not quite understanding this at all. Why?

We don’t even want those guys on the team if we can help it.

Because if they get a couple of key injuries at the same time, Joe Rock is probably a more workable option than a not-100%, under-performing Wikelman Gonzalez.

Tyler Gilbert is the dude I would launch next

I'm not a scout, but I thought the same thing while looking at his delivery. It also could have been him having literally no control that lead me to that conclusion. He also went from 95-96 in his first inning to 92-93 on his second inning. He isn't ready for the majors. I'd rather him just work on his stuff in the minors.

Schultz and Hagen Smith having apparently mediocre stuff is not something I predicted coming into the season.

It's unbelievable really. The 1-inning drop off in mph is crazy. Smith practically falls off the mound after every pitch.
Why do the Sox draft so many sidearm/low slot guys? Is that what Bannister orders? Getz? Shirley on his own? All of the above? And it was the same thing in the 2026 draft.

Yet another example of poor roster mismanagement by Getz. Pereira, Hays, and Gonzalez all dumped for nothing.

Hays was unavoidable (if they couldn't trade him) but dumping Pereira and Gonzalez while keeping Joe Rock (and others) seems nutty.

You can sign a journeyman reliever to be as bad as Joe Rock. The guy has a 2 WHIP in both the minors and majors right now.

But he (Hagen Smith) is rated much higher than Boston Smith would have been if Sox had kept him. I don't get it.

1-5 pick

Boston Smith only had a $50,000 bonus in the sixth round out of Wright State, pick 171. And no obvious position.

Kay has been the only bright spot in a rotation that leans on way too many innings from Opening pitchers and middle relievers.

Sean Burke hasn’t been a bright spot?

Do you think the sox considered Gonzalez simply a throw in non-prospect?

at the time he certainly wasn't

unless it was internally

like how they view Korey Lee

Watching Ian & Jimmy last night. Jimmy brought up that Smith is wild but so nasty that he doesn't get hit. Then he said that at the ML level hitters will just lay off and make him throw strikes and that is the problem. If the Sox got Hicks on track I hope they can do the same with Smith.

Now you're changing the question. You did say Gonzalez was 25% of the Crochet trade. If we're counting bodies, yes he was - but not in terms of value. I beg to differ that he was weighted equally with Meidroth, B Montgomery, and Teel. I don't know if the Sox should have DFA'd Gonzalez, but he was obviously the 4th man in that deal.

more like Basabe's weakest brother in Moncada Kopech and Victor Diaz deal lol

5-10% of that trade

40% Teel

35% Braden

20% Meidroth

5% Gonzalez

Saying he was 25% of the Crochet trade doesn't mean he was worth 25% of that trades value, y'all are reading s%*# into something that I didn't say or mean, here's what I did mean: All 4 players in that trade were valuable, this wasn't a Nolan Jones throw in piece of garbage.

the salient point here is this was a decently valuable piece that got hurt, and hasnt been the same since coming off the IL. and because the Sox put him on the 40 man last year, he's another guy who they don't have the luxury of using a 40man spot for, just like a bunch of other guys who some others here have stated were dumped for nothing

you cannot sit here and say roster management has been a strong suit for Getz this year

It's common for the rankings to be behind the reality. They are really a lagging indicator. Jake Eder was still ranked in the top 100 when the Sox traded for him.
And from a trading standpoint, I think it's a lot easier to trade a pass-along prospect like B. Smith than it is to trade one that you drafted and developed. The sense of loss is less. Somehow the Nats, who originally traded B Smith, ended up with a promising young pitcher; we ended up with a year and 2 months of an expensive pitcher who appears to be on his last legs.

Smith has such a funky ass delivery and appears to have tremendous spin rates on all his pitches based on how early some guys were committing. To me it looks like something you can work with, even rocking a very high walk rate. We'll see how he looks when teams get better data, but that was a pretty solid debut. If he's coming out of the pen he just needs 30 juiced pitches so if he walks someone, go get that strikeout at max effort next batter.

Joe Rock kinda rocks. Excellent surname aside, 6'6 lefties with huge K rates don't grow on trees. Tyler Gilbert and Tyler Davis are still on the 40man. s%*#, I would've kept Wikelman over Cannon.

Not while giving up 2 baserunners an inning. He’s a 26-year old project and I don’t think I would have dumped Gonzalez over him.

Get a big lead tonight and bring in McDougal with his high-octane gas for his MLB debut.

I would love for any of you people to tell me about this dream organization you keep comparing the White Sox to that converts even 50% of the players that enter their organization. The reason that teams maintain 6 minor league teams isn't because they imagine MLB will expand rosters to 200 players at some point, and they'll have 200 All-Stars suiting up soon.

I can, because it has been. The fact that players get DFAed when there are no other teams who want to trade for them isn't "bad roster management". The fact that somebody like Wikelman Gonzalez made it all the way down to the Marlins means that more than half the league (who probably have shitty records, in part, because of a lack of credible bullpen arms) - passed on him. He got injured. He's probably overweight. He hasn't snapped back to his 2025 form after recovering. They took a flier on him and he didn't work out. Next.

I really can't understand the people who, after every single DFA of a guy who just didn't work out, kneel down on the ground, cry, and shake their fists at the sky.
