Sox ending up using four relievers yesterday including two of their bulk guys in Schweitzer & Richards. That sucks about the latter given they had Castillo on the bump last night and were probably hoping to get a few more innings out of him. A true bullpen game would have been easier with those two available.

They still have Fedde & Urquidy to provide multiple innings, but hard to feel confident either of them will go beyond four. I think we’re going to see Hagen sent down and one of the Charlotte SPs called up. Shane is scheduled to pitch tonight for Charlotte & Thorpe is scheduled for tomorrow. I think one of those guys has to get the call. Protecting the bullpen is just as important as winning one of these next two games, so need the extra arm to have more options to absorb innings at minimum.

If I am managing today I use Hudson to open the game for an inning.

Then it's a combination of Fedde/Urquidy to cover the next 6-7 innings depending on the score. If we are winning then Taylor gets the 9th. you have to save your pen and the rest of the guys. Then we figure out tomorrow when tomorrow comes

The problem is tomorrow is a day game, so we kind of need to know if we’ll need one of the Charlotte guys for tomorrow so you can ensure they can get here in time. I think if you plan to use both Fedde & Urquidy, then you have no choice to bring up Thorpe (or Shane) for tomorrow’s game.

That may be the plan. Or have whoever travel just in case. Not like they can't fly back to re-join Charlotte and pitch the next game there.

Meh, we don’t really need to know. They know who it’s gonna be and I bet they person will be with the team by end of day, without announcement until his start is announced

I don’t mean me and you need to know, but that the Sox need to now so they can ensure the player is actually in Chicago for the time of the game.

Some details on Drew Thorpe’s start from last night:

• 91.4 MPH AVG velocity over the course of five innings

• 91.9 MPH AVG velocity in the 2nd & 3rd innings

• 94 MPH max velocity hit on 33rd pitch (swinging strike for K)

• 17 of 43 (40%) 4-seamers thrown 92 MPH or above

It’s very clear he’s got a bit more juice now than he did before. Wasn’t throwing max effort all the time, so I think we’ll see this continue go up as he continues to build up strength and decides to dial it up more frequently.

But in all seriousness, right now I think you've got

Burke, Castillo, Kay

Martin (if the IL trip helps him out)

Openers + Fedde/Urquidy (if he can have 1 more good outing)

Thorpe, Sandlin and Schultz all waiting in the wings, in that order.

If Castillo and Urquidy can bring the stuff that they brought against the Reds and Cubs, I'll feel good about the playoffs.

Getting something of substance in our starting rotation picture for a few years in exchange for Cease would be absolutely huge.

I’m also a fan of letting Fedde start his own game. An opener doesn’t really seem to make him better or worse, so just let him start the dumb game and see what happens

Absolutely.

We need to find arms and someone with Fedde’s pedigree should be one of the first ones in line.

If anyone else is confused about the Drew Thorpe timeline this is what I found out.

• The Start Date: Thorpe's official rehab assignment clock began on July 18, 2026.

• The 30-Day Deadline: This gave the White Sox until August 17, 2026, to conclude his rehab.

• The Catch (Rainouts and Delays): Days where games are postponed due to weather, or built-in travel/off-days between moving to different minor league affiliates (like his move from Double-A to Triple-A), sometimes do not count against the 30-day clock, slightly extending the calendar window.

• The Goal: Because Thorpe missed an entire year following April 2025 Tommy John surgery, the White Sox are using every single allowable day of this window to let him build up his pitch count and stamina in the minor leagues, rather than rushing him back to the majors.

Once this strict window officially expires, the White Sox cannot keep him on a "rehab assignment" anymore. They must either activate him to the major league roster or formally reinstate him and option him to the minors.

So what I glean from this is pay attention to The Catch section. Basically by starting in the low minors you extend his 30 days to extra days for each subsequent move up the ladder. I do not know if there was also any weather days added to this. But it's been 6 days since his 30 days rehab assignment ended but we have no clue about how many extra days they have been allowed.

They will either use an option to officially option him to AAA or call him up but nothing has been announced but you'd think it would be soon.

I'm feeling the Sox would like to keep Thorpe on rehab if possible until the September call ups. If not possible then call Thorpe up and send down someone else for a few days recalling that person on 9/1. However, roster eligibility for the playoffs could then be a concern

Burke & Kay will save the day.

Sox will be able to add one pitcher on Sep 1st. At this point, you got to think it will be someone who can provide some bulk innings. Thorpe & Sandlin remain the two most obvious candidates to me. Assuming Martin comes back at some point as well, that would theoretically eat up that spot too unless you decide to send Schweitzer back down. We also have to see if Urquidy can sustain even a fraction of what he showed against the Cubs.

Personally, I’d like to see Thorpe get a chance in our rotation and bump one of Urquidy or Fedde back to the bullpen. Interesting that tonight’s starter is listed as a TBD given Thorpe should be ready to go if called upon tonight. Probably just the Sox debating whether to use an opener for Urquidy or not.

Does anyone think they may try to add someone who is waived prior to Sept 1? Like how we saw some guys move at the very end of August the last couple of years. Would probably be higher salary, soon to be free-agent (but not QO potential) type arms.

I'll add this since I just brought this up before I saw it. For the sake of discussion I guess.

It will be interesting how the rotation sets up for the playoffs. Of they have to battle just to get in, you have to take what you get. If there is a chance to rest someone or skip a start to set up your game one guy, I wonder by then who it will be.

I hope they bring up arms in September to give these guys some rest. Sox have a lot of workhorses.

If they bring up Thorpe and/or Sandlin, yes to starting; Thorpe is a big no in the pen to me. Sandlin should be good in the pen.
Leave Urquidy where he is; he really doesn't seem like a reliever anyway,
Fedde was pitching well as a starter (with or without opener); they yank him to the pen and he's terrible. Back starting and he was good again. Leave him in the rotation.
