The trade deadline is the only reason the Sox haven't won this yet/the Guardians are still in it

Featured Replies

Look at the players the Guardians acquire.

Foster Griffin - 2.2 IP and 7ks

Jo Adell - 4/15, 6 RBIs.

Patrick Bailey - 5/12 with a HR. (To be fair this was a trade in May)

Lowe - 3/12 with 5 BBs

Meanwhile for us..

Doyle - 1/8

Luis Castillo, Joey Bart, Brazoban - LOL

The Guardians focused on acquiring good players, even if they were rentals. Getz focused strictly on players under control that they thought they could "fix". We were leading the division all year and he didn't even give a good effort to add freaking rentals that would help. He got cute and blew it.

The difference between this series being over and it still going is the trade deadline. Guards did well, Sox blew it.

The numbers don't lie.

The deadline was a disaster.

Those giving credit to Getz also need to saddle him with this shithole.

The Cleveland Guardians acquired two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year's MLB draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson.

Bailey, 26, is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the major leagues, though his struggles with the bat and Daniel Susac's imminent return from the injured list prompted the Giants to seek a deal for Bailey this week.

The Guardians stepped up with the No. 29 pick -- which they are allowed to trade because it is a competitive-balance round choice -- and the 23-year-old Wilkinson, whose large frame earned him the nickname "Tugboat" and whose strikeout rate has been elite since he entered professional baseball.

Cleveland general manager Chris Antonetti said before Saturday night's game against the Minnesota Twins that the organization has had interest in Bailey for a long time, but the right opportunity didn't happen until this past week.

Perfect timing

SFG season crashing under new manager Vitello of Univ.Tennessee

Wanted to open spot for Susac

And small market Guards had an extra competitive balance pick to dangle

Getz kept his powder dry for the future of a younger team to be extended. Either you like that, or you don’t. There is no right answer. Only preferences. And look at the Cubs. Hoyer went all in for 2026. Nada. It’s unpredictable anyway.

The Guardians have been given a huge lift from savvy player acquisitions, including:

Right-handed hitting Joe Adell, who has added power and depth from the right side of the plate.

Left-handed hitting Nathaniel Lowe, who adds a power bat from the left side, and excellent defense at first base.

Switch-hitting catcher Patrick Bailey, who has been tremendous on defense, and has added some huge offense to the roster.

Left-handed starter Foster Griffin, who has added a much needed arm to the starting rotation.

Seeing the consequences of Castillo providing virtually nothing post-trade.

Compared to the Guards, Getz got an F at the deadline.

The two key components of the Sox pitching this postseason - Smoke and Mirrors - have collapsed like a house of cards.

Can you fail a test you weren’t taking?

He took the test when he acquired Luis Castillo and his $24M salary. It was his big move and one of the worst trades (from an impact standpoint) in baseball history. I hope they’re doing a post audit on their evaluation process of that move, because even us couch GMs could tell it was bad the day it happened.

It wasn’t a perfect year, but it was close. If this was the only thing they messed up, not a big problem. I agree it was a bad move. It was forced. But it was bad because they limited the amount of of assets they were willing to risk, and got what they could. And they didn’t prioritize adding to the team. They didn’t much care, but wanted to give the fans SOMETHING. In that, they failed. But the long term vision is their priority. 2026 is just a stepping stone.

And Cleveland gave up ~7 prospects for them, only one from their top 30 was included (#17). Meanwhile we gave up Adams (#7) and Smith (now ranked #14 in the Mariners system). We also gave up a high upside international prospect who has torched the DSL so far at 17 years old.

Deadline has absolutely cost this team. The "idea" Getz had was probably right, in terms of the volume he acquired. Having another reliable starter that could give you 4-5 innings and a 7th inning arm would infact probably be the difference right now between going to Game 5 vs. getting ready for the ALCS.

He acquired both of those positions and neither one of them made the playoff roster. It was a huge swing and a miss that is probably going to cost them from advancing into the next round.

The deadline was bad, but you can’t leave out players like Fedde and Grichuk who were mid season acquisitions nonetheless. Hell we churned a ton over in April / May, I can’t even remember who all started.

Fedde wasn't a mid-season acquisition FWIW. He signed February 10th.

Castillo is a failed acquisition. But gaining a dude at the deadline was clearly not a full throated effort by design. Lets see what happens next year when the heat is actually on him.

Sox were also relying on McDougal to be a power arm down the stretch in the bullpen. Another development fail as his command is so bad.

If you add Grichuk

the net difference is closer to +1 bWAR to Cleveland

now whether they will pay Adell +/-$9.6 million next year is another story

Bailey will be there for sure

They love Adell there and he’s a perfect fit. He’s going nowhere

Heat will be even more on Castillo?

To retire or face constant booing?

Just not getting how 2027...when/if it happens, would be considered more pressure?

Could just as easily end up being totally written off like Moncada's final Sox season.

Point is tho, I’m cool with Ron making this thread. Anyone else complaining I say eat s%*#. This board was terrified of trading anyone and just wanted to see how the year went. This was what you wanted.

Remember - Cleveland gets free goodies every year because they are small market.

But I heard that Pham was a better acquisition than Adell.

Heat on Getz. The pressure will be on in 2027 and beyond because that is their earliest planned timeframe for the team to improve to the vision they had for it

Yes and no...

Nothing compared to the heat on the other side of town...along with NYY, NYM, Phillies, Red Sox, Mariners, Blue Jays, Orioles, etc.

Sox fans, sure.

But JR has never really cared about what the fans want...
