December 15, 200421 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1946434 The San Francisco Giants placed catcher A.J. Pierzynski on waivers Tuesday, just one day after finalizing a deal with free agent Mike Matheny. After agreeing to a $10.5 million, three-year contract with Matheny, general manager Brian Sabean said the team wouldn't offer Pierzynski salary arbitration by a Dec. 20 deadline and would let him leave as a non-tendered free agent. Pierzynski batted .272 with 11 homers and 77 RBI in his only season in San Francisco but is not nearly as good a defensive player as Matheny. Pierzynski's representatives and the Giants were far apart on the catcher's worth. "I want to thank A.J. for his contributions to the Giants last season," Sabean said. "A.J. did his job here under difficult circumstances ... and still led the league in RBI for his position."
December 15, 200421 yr Lets pick him up. Although I don't think the Sox make any moves until they get another pitcher, imo.
December 15, 200421 yr Hell yes pick him up, if the Sox still have the money to sign Odalis after that this team would be in great shape!
December 15, 200421 yr He is a hell of a player, if we got production out of our catcher like he could provide us we would be in great shape.
December 15, 200421 yr pick him up then trade him to Min for Santana!! Um, yes, GREAT idea.....I'm sure they would go for that.... I'd say pick him up....
December 15, 200421 yr He could have made $5 million in arbitration, I'm thinking he's going to be asking for $4 million at least, especially after what Matheny got.
December 15, 200421 yr I think he's worth 4 mil and that he will return to his former form (~.300, 15 hr, 80 rbis)
December 15, 200421 yr I like Pierzynski. He's an asshole, but he's still a damn good ballplayer. Here's an interesting stat about Pierzynski. In 471 AB's this past year, he struck out 27 times...that is a strike out once every 17 AB's. The funnier thing is...he STILL struck out more times then he walked. Anyways...how bad are the Giants? They give up Joe Nathan for this guy and only have him for one year...meanwhile, Joe Nathan has become one of the best closers in the majors. What a good move by the Twins that was.

Plus his numbers should be much more inline with the .300 average he had two years ago. He'd be an oustanding pickup.

December 15, 200421 yr If we have a choice between a starting pitcher and a catcher, I along with mostly everyone on this website would prefer the starting pitcher, but if Jerry is willing to supply us with both, then hell, why not? CWSOX45
December 15, 200421 yr If we do sign A.J., I'm assuming we cut Davis loose, and go with Burke as the back-up, unless we go with the 3 catchers then.
December 15, 200421 yr A.J. is the type of "impact" player that KW said he would consider with the free money. He's definitely one of the best catchers in baseball, and he fits our needs so much. Yes, he's a questionable character, but the Sox haven't exactly brought in guys with sterling reputations in the past.
December 15, 200421 yr i feel bad for burke i assume if we pick him up he'd go back to the minors. i want aj though, even though I hated him when he was a Twinkie.
December 15, 200421 yr An A.J., Burke combo would be perfect. Burke could play against tough lefties like Santana and C.C., and he can continue to be Buehrle's personal catcher. Honestly, the situation makes way too much sense, but I highly doubt A.J. will be offered by the Sox.
December 15, 200421 yr If we sign him, don't be surpised when he somehow has the flu during the first Twins series.
