White Sox general manager Kenny Williams is fond of "flying under the radar" when it comes to laying the groundwork for trades, and he might be doing just that.

Despite all the talk about the Sox trying to get a deal done with Cincinnati for outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., it could just be the ultimate smoke screen for something else in the works.

Seattle closer Eddie Guardado reportedly has cleared waivers, and according to a source in the Mariners organization, is being mentioned in a potential trade with the Sox.

The lingering back problems of Sox closer Dustin Hermanson have been well-documented, but the situation could be worsening, and not just because Hermanson blew a save opportunity Tuesday night for just the second time this season.

The right-handed reliever's back problems are such that it's leaving the Sox unclear as to his availability on a daily basis.

He was iffy for Wednesday night's series finale against Minnesota, meaning the Sox would have given consideration to either Damaso Marte or Cliff Politte as the closer.

The Sox would like to see rookie Bobby Jenks in that role, but he was unavailable after pitching three innings in Tuesday night's 16-inning marathon.

Jenks hasn't heard from manager Ozzie Guillen about possibly being used as a closer, but the second-year skipper has talked about it publicly.

"We know what's going on down there with Hermanson," Jenks said. "He's taking care of his back and everything that's going on with him.

"He's giving this team a lot, just showing he's going to throw through it. He's becoming a smarter pitcher just by doing it, having to learn how to get guys out without his best stuff. Once he comes back from this and is completely healthy, watch out."

While the addition of Guardado wouldn't necessarily cost Hermanson his closer's job, the Seattle reliever, who has 29 saves this season, would at a minimum serve as a good insurance policy.

Nice, now throw in a bat and we're suddenly a lot better.

Well IIRC there was an article around the deadline saying Bavasi would just accept a prospect for Guardado. Unfortunately that prospect is likely to be Brandon McCarthy or Chris Young.

And unless Raul Ibanez is included, a lot of posters are probably going to say, well we need offense more than pitching right now.

Dude, it's the Daily Southtown. After reading some of the absolute horses*** that they published around the AS break I don't believe s*** that comes out of that paper anymore.

You think McCarthy for Villone was ridiculous image what they'd want for their stud closer who has 1.29 ERA and is 29/30 in save opps.

Package Rowand and some prospects for Ichiro and Guardado.

well, thank you for the warm welcome, Mr. Rourke. And that's a fine midget you have there........

i agree that we need another bat, but one way to compensate for bad offense is to load up on pitching. the pen would be so deep with this guy. if a starter in the playoffs got in trouble (and i mean gives up like 2 runs) you could march out cotts (2.01) politte (1.94) guardado (1.29) and hermanson (1.76) for the 6 -7-8-9. thats a damn short ball game. throw into that mix jenks marte and a hot vizcaino....woa

He was the #1 guy I wanted a few weeks ago.

Now, I'm starting to think the #1 need is an offensive weapon of any sort.

It would be a nice addition, but....we need a bat alot more than we need another closer. It would be nice to have 6 closers in the pen and all, but the fact is, our lineup sucks right now.

Considering the price it would cost to get Guardado, and the fact that if you don't score, you don't need a closer.....I'm totally against trading for him.

Agreed. It never hurts to bolster the pitching in any shape or form, but that's not my biggest concern.

interesting.

it's definitely better than nothing.

At this point all this trade would mean is the Sox would lose games 2-1 or 3-2 instead of 3-1 or 4-2

Ibanez and Guardado...problems fixed.

No. Not really. He has 2 less HRs than Everett. He also has +30 points on his OPS and +30 on his BA. This does not solve all of our problems. Neither does a 35 year old pitcher with a partially torn rotator cuff and a team that would want a s*** load of talent for the two.

Ibanez and Guardado would be great pickups they however would not cure all problems for this club and would cost more than should be given up for them.

i'd be more concerned with guardado's rotator cuff if he wasn't pitching so well with it in the shape it is.

hell, maybe you don't even need a friggin rotator cuff to pitch. who knew?
