Tim Redding

Featured Replies

I didn't see this posted anywhere, although I'll go ahead and delete it if I do find it;

Also this week, the Sox signed right-hander Tim Redding to a minor-league contract. Redding, 27, struggled last season with the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, going a combined 0-6 with a 10.57 ERA in 10 appearances (seven starts). He pitched the previous four seasons with the Houston Astros, winning 10 games in 2003.

Redding will make $500,000 if he makes the major-league roster, with another $400,000-plus available in bonuses. He can request a release if he doesn't break camp with the team. He will get every opportunity in a starting role in spring training with Mark Buehrle (United States), Freddy Garcia (Venezuela) and Javier Vazquez (Puerto Rico) all pitching in the World Baseball Classic.

That part of the article is laughable. :D

Redding had one good season in 2003 with the Astros but has pretty much been horrible his entire career. But I guess he's worth a shot as a long reliever / injury spot starter if he has a good spring training. I remember him getting shellacked with the Yankees last season though.

Vizcaino's spot? Atkins is gone too.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Of course, he will have to not get rocked in Spring Training first.

What they mean is he'll get a shot to start the spring training games with those 3 pitching in the wbc. Not a bad move, never hurts to add more depth.

I know.

I guess Redding has had command problems ever since his good 2003 season. He was supposed to be a solid #5 starter for the Padres last season. He's still young (27) and supposedly has really good stuff. This is a Cooper reclamation project (shades of the Esteban Loaiza signing in 2003). If we trade Garland and Redding pans out in spring training, he could be our longman / 6th starter. I doubt he does though.

Redding = next Cy Young

Redding sucks. If he makes the White Sox, the Sox are in trouble.

He is depth and depth is good.

Late in the season Redding commented that he was finally pain free after two years. He had a shoulder strain last year and also in 2004.

I like moves of this nature, no downside risk whatsoever.

wasnt he once on the pirates?

edit: no he wasnt..... but hey, at least with the yankees in 2005 he posted a 54.00 ERA

SWEET!

sox must know something we dont... i tryst my team, he's this years kevin walker with more upside.... and younger... and right handed.... ok, bad comparrison.

Cooper will work his magic and Redding will be a stud.

Loaiza didn't have control problems that I remember. He just needed a new pitch. However, if Redding turns it around he might make things interesting in the bullpen.

Low risk, high reward.

Love these signings.

good organizational move for depth. That being said, he better not be in our bullpen.

I love the fact that most of KW signings can all be categorized as low risk, high reward.

Could not have said it better myself.

I know everyone SHOULD love these, but this is the White Sox here.

Even if he does suck beyond belief, Ozzie and KW will still have him on the roster at one point and use him in at least 1 critical situation.

Not necessarily true. He signed a minor league contract so he'll be in AAA unless he show's us something in ST. And if he shows us something in ST, he must have improved something. See: Pablo Ozuna

Kevin Walker and Tom Gordon had similiar deals though, no?

I believe Walker even started in AAA, was eventually brought up and consistently s*** the bed. Ozzie even decided to use him in a close game vs. the Angels. I think we all remember that night.

This is overreacting.

The deal says if Redding doesn't make the team he can request his release.

Maybe try to look at the upside of this?

He's implying that he'll get every shot to start during spring training since the Sox guys are going to be pitching in the WBC.

Regardless this isn't a horrid move. He could be the last guy out of the pen if he's healthy.

Redding isn't very good at all. It will take a couple of injuries for him to ever get an actual chance to be a contributor with the Sox.

In the end, I think the Sox just hope he can stick around Charlotte and help out the Knights. I doubt anyone is going to offer him a major league job at the end of spring and if they don't, I think he'll report to AAA.
