I still think they'll bring at least one more guy in, even if they have to stash them at AAA.

 

They will give this Thornton guy every chance to improve, he will be pitched in low pressure situations and they'll work hard to improve his mechanics. However, they will not risk a chance to win the division just because this guy has good raw stuff. Either he produces (improves) or he doesn't, he'll get a reasonable amount of time but it won't be all year if he stays lousy.

I mentioned in another thread that I hope Sweeney, Fields, Valido, and Owens do in the minors what they've done so far in the spring. If it turns out that we need to make a move around June or July, we're gonna need as many healthy trade assets as possible. I wouldn't want to give up a Sweeney or a Fields, but I want another title.

God I would like to find that thread when that Koch/Foulke trade happened a couple years ago. I know Jas was one of them but alot of people said that Cotts was the interesting name in the deal cause he was good spect with impressive numbers (except his walks) He is the only one left in that deal with us in the same uniform.. Hell Koch is not even in professional baseball anymore. What a pickup. Now a reliever and one of the best/underrated relievers in the game. (probably shouldn't get too carried away for one season, but he looks like a diamond in the rough.)

 

I'm glad I was also a "one of the many" Cotts backers when that thread about running his ass out of town was around. (Should try and look at that too.)

I admit, I was critical of Cotts in the beginning. He, along with Jon Garland, taught me to have more patience with young pitchers.

Michael Lewis is creating a sequel to his original bestseller called, "Moneyball: Postseason Success. How Winning A Postseason Series is Complete Luck--Unless Oakland Wins One. Then It Isn't."

 

As you can imagine, the material is a bit lacking. Lewis needs to reaffirm Beane's genius somehow, and writing about another ignorant Williams move would have been perfect .

 

Don't get me wrong--Beane's infinite wisdom can already fill the Library of Congress, but you need new material once in awhile....

Don't the A's have like 4 outfielders counting Swisher, a first baseman, and Frank Thomas, already? That's like 6 guys to start at 4 spots.

Perhaps you view diamonds in the rough differently than I.

 

Cotts was a 2nd round pick..I don't see him as a diamond in the rough, I view him as a pitcher with good stuff that panned out.

 

A diamond in the rough is Esteban Loaiza...a guy that is brought in to contend for a SP job and goes out and puts up a Cy Young caliber season. Or David Ortiz, who was released by the Twins because he was too inconsistent and too injury prone - he has gone on to become a top 3 slugger in the majors.

Perhaps you view diamonds in the rough differently than I. 

 

Probably wite. Give me a break I've been out of school for nearly a year since I finished high school, and out of soxtalk for a year and a couple months since my computer was f***ed up to the max. My soxtalk IQ has dropped alittle as has my vocabulary but I'm still good-looking. I still see him that way cause noone saw Cotts in that deal (some even considered a throw-in; nice spect but a longshot unless his walks drop.)

Not to be devil's advocate, but KW had to expect a pretty high price for anything from the A's. With the exception of the east coast love for NY and Boston, most baseball pundits see the Sox and A's as the top contenders for the AL title and possibly a World Series Championship. For KW to ask BB to help fix his team's biggest weakness, he had to expect something like the response he got. I admit Juan Cruz is not worthy of Brian Anderson at this point, but I doubt Beane wanted to even negotiate with the Sox.

I wonder if Cruz is out of options, he's been around for a while now. Maybe that's what's driving the talk of him being available in trade? Not sure.

Not sure. All I know about Cruz is that he's signed for $575,000 this season, arbitration eligible in 2007 and 2008, and will be a free agent in 2009.
