If you don't understand Baseball, yes that is true. However "optioned" is quite obviously a verb in the article.

It's not a matter of knowing baseball. It's a matter of knowing the English language. And it's quite obviously a verb to you, not to everyone.

So are we talking about a RH Damaso Marte? Million dollar arm, 10 cent head? Meh, its still an improvement on the question marks we had, plus he will be the middle relief guy, not nearly as much pressure there.

I don't think he's as electric as Marte, but his head probably isn't as screwed up. Its well worth the gamble IMO. I'd much rather has Riske come in with the game on the line than Montero, no matter what his reputation. I really don't think KW could have acquired more for Lopez, and it would have taken several injuries to get him to Chicago.

Do you know what optioning a player to AAA is? If you know baseball, you do. If you don't, then its confusing to you. It made perfect sense.

Well, if you don't understand "optioned" as a baseball term then you obviously don't follow baseball all that closely and would probably have no interest in Tracey being sent down to Charlotte.

Great trade. Just what we needed and didn't really lose much. We have a bunch of flame throwers at the end of our bullpen with Jenks and Thornton...and Cotts to a degree since he pitches up and in very well so Riske will be a nice addition and might make Politte even better with the difference in their fastballs.

I initially read the first post as "Javier Vazquez." :o Glad to know that wasn't the case. :D

Great trade by KW! A productive, veteran arm in exchange for a non-stud minor-leaguer... a very high-upside, low-riske deal! :P

Three Year Splits for Riske

vs. LHB .195

vs. RHB .233

Sub 3 ERA in June, July, August and October 3.3 or so in Sept.

2.86 post all star

1.78 ERA against Detroit in 30 IP

2.65 ERA @ the Cell

What's surprising is his success against lefties. I read where Boston really needed someone to come in and get a lefty out. I wonder why they didn't give him a whirl. I heard they gave up 2 slams the last couple games to left handed hitters.

With the current state of the bullpen, many would welcome Marte back with open arms. That's not such a bad thing right now...If its true...

So does this mean Montero will be optioned to Charlotte when/if Politte comes back?

Right now I'd take every pitcher in our pen over Marte. He has no place here.

I'm sure that's what would happen.

I am not downtalking this deal at all, just making a comparision based on the talk that was going on... I love the deal.

If we didn't already have great LHs in the pen, I would love him back, especially since Mackowiak hasn't really impressed me much.

Yes I do. To me the press release read as Riske was traded for Lopez and the optioned player Tracey. Why is that so impossible to comprehend?

El Duque 06? the 5.51 ERA? The whopping 4 starts for the Mets thus far? Huh?

sorry, I meant the El duque that shut down the Red Sox in the playoffs. So, when we meet the Red Sox again, riske will pull an El Duque.

And it's good to see you again, Mr. Sarcasm.

Before the Marte talks go any further, let us keep in mind why he isn't pitching for the White Sox in 2006. As has been said here on multiple occasions, Damaso Marte and Ozzie Guillen could no longer co-exist. Period. Damaso, since day one, has been described as a sheepish guy that avoids confrontation on all fronts.

During the Manuel administration, Marte flurished because he had a manager that would not press him or challenge his sheepish demeanor. As soon as Ozzie arrived, we see Marte's numbers go in the tank and what was one of the better left-handers in all of baseball quickly turned into someone that could not be trusted...especially in the later innings. A lights-out pitcher becomes a "head-case" under Guillen's watch--coincidence? I think not. Ozzie is a pretty intense guy. You're either with him or you're not. You're either going to play his brand of baseball both on the field and off or you're not to be trusted.

We can draw a similar parallel to Javier Lopez. Although it has been said Lopez has been nothing but professional since signing with the Sox in the off-season, it's pretty clear he was one of those guys Ozzie did not want to go to war with. Clearly, Lopez's success in Charlotte would merit a call-up over the likes of an Agustin Montero and a Sean Tracey, but, the call never came.

Williams was able to turn a guy with no value to this club after the 05' campaign into one of the better utility players in baseball--the Chicago Marte saga ends there.

Because thats not what it read. It read "the White Sox have acquired blah blah for blah blah and optioned blah blah to AAA"

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 12:47 PM)
This is exactly right. Obviously, the Sox weren't all that high on Lopez. If Riske bombs, all it really costs is cash.

and if im not mistaken, Riske is making pretty minimal money also correct?

This is a great deal

$1.8 million

$1.8 mil for the full season, so it's about $1.2 left this year.

Damaso Marte is the stereotypical "dumb jock" type. Very nice guy, but hes more athlete than rocket scientist, which isnt a bad thing, if a manager knows how to harness a guy like that

...with the contract ending after the 2006 season.

This was exactly the sort of guy Williams was looking for.

If the bullpen continues on in these dire straits, he may go for broke and make some sort of blockbuster deal around the deadline. But, in the meantime, Riske will be used in an attempt to stop the bleeding. It's almost a showcase to see if more drastic moves need to be made.

THye took lopez off the scrap head, made him look sexy as he could and got a decent arm ini the pen for him...

That's exactly how I see it. Kenny Williams strikes again!

Im still worried about his back. Bad backs+pitchers=DL

SOSH seem to not like this trade much.

Semicolons seperated independant clauses. The semicolon in questiopn seperates "Riske acquired for Lopez" and "Tracey optioned to Charlotte."
