Yeah, people rightfully criticise players when they're sucking then when they finally turn it around (hopefully) they let up and start to rightfully praise them. It's not like people call for his head then when he stops sucking act like they didn't.

 

Yeah, I ripped Garland at the beginning as did a bunch of other people, now he's pitching well and I'm glad, he deserves praise for that which his getting from me. I'm not just going to hate on the guy for when he's going good because I hated on him when he was sucking.

 

There's a difference between constructive criticism and ridiculous, knee-jerk overreaction to a guy who's struggling at a particular time. Unfortunately, we get WAY more of the latter around here.

2.5 months of suckage sure is a long period of time for people to overreact to.

I've said it before, Cliff Pollite was the only sox player (that includes pitchers and hitters) that I've criticised this season (surprising I have backed Widger more than once) and I knew Garland was going to get his s*** together. The only time I ever put down Garland was when I said he was the Darin Erstad of pitching (mediocre player, had 1 career/fluke season, is living off that season in $, and is back to mediocre) I still expect him to get his era into the 4's whether its the average 4.50 or better/worse.

Except that it didn't take anywhere near that long for people to overreact. It basically took his first two starts in April.

Ive always been a big Garland fan so I can pat myself on the back now that he has begun to turn his season around. A course i was a big fan of getting Vazquez too so that hasnt looked as good. But ive always been against Freddy so i can be proud of that too =p

Does that mean you CURRENTLY hate Garcia, Vazquez and Buehrle? They have been god-damned terrible recently! Buehrle is 0-3 with a 13.81 ERA in three July starts!

I always had faith that JG would eventually turn it around.

 

Unlike say Freddy Garcia's problems, they weren't physical. He was still throwing at the same velocity etc. But he's such a control pitcher and it's critical he doesn't leave balls up in the zone and he can locate that changeup for a strike. And he seems to be doing those things now.

 

Gives me hope that Vazquez will turn it around also, since all of his problems are mental and not physical either.

Good for Jonny boy, excellent excellent game last nite. His last couple of starts were very good,

but going into this game, knowing the SOX needed a WIN, he stepped up big time. A game like this is going to help Jon go a long way the rest of the season, knowing he can shut a team down when he wants to.

Which is becuase Jon was a very mediocre pitcher from '02-'04... and just got paid $29 million this past winter.

 

I'm glad to see that he's (apparently) back on track. If Freddy's arm is dying as quickly as it seems to be and Vazquez continues to have the mental toughness of a 12-year-old, we're going to need solid pitching from Jon.

Jons comments in the paper about from the get go this year, he wasnt confident in his pitches brought more fuel to the fire. Jon is a contact pitcher, which of course means he providings little worth for most SABR guys. He has a poor K rate. He will always have a poor K rate. For Jon to be successful its a simple formula for him. Throw first pitch strikes, keep the ball down, and let the sinker run. Pitching inside to righties, and using that Changeup in strikeout situations and keeping it low make him succesful. When Garland is 2-0 3-1 on every hitter he will get rocked. He cant pitch behind. This is what I expected from Jon this year. Keep the ball down, get ahead and be aggressive. If he loses so be it. But when he nibbles around the plate, walks guys until he cant anymore and then throws a 4 seam fastball over the plate on a 2-0 count that winds up over the fence, he gets a lot of people upset with him.

 

 

Hopefully this Jon keeps pitching aggressive like this.

Last offseason when there was all kinds of talk about dumping Garland or that he would go to California, I argued that I thought the guy had turned a corner, was still very young, and was well worth keeping. I think he's going to win a lot of games for us over the next 3 years, and possibly beyond. Frankly, I didn't expect the rough patch he had from April-June, but it appears to be behind him.

 

He's not pitching second best among our starters over his last 5 or 6 games, he's clearly pitched the best stretch of games over that span. He's gone 5-0 and we won the one no-decision where he gave up 5 runs. Indeed, he appears to be having the streak he started last year with, just at a different time of the year.

 

Keep it up Jon. We need all of our starters to pitch as well.

"hated on" not "hated" it's all about the terminology. I'm not happy with the way Buehlre has pitched over his last few starts, I've been disappointed in Vazquez all season and have stated this numerous times and Garcia; if he's on this team in August I'm going to be upset.

Freddy would be a below-average pitcher in the NL as well. Any team that would have to pick up the $13-$14 million left on his contract AND give up prospects for him would want something better in return.

Make that 6-0 with a 2.48 era in his last 7 starts.

 

If you take out his June 24th start against the Astros, in which he gave up 5 ER in 5 IP, his numbers since June 13th look like this: 6-0, 1.67 era. I know you can't erase this start. It just makes his numbers a whole lot sexier when you do.

 

Anyway, keep it goin, Jon. We're gonna need this from you the rest of the way if we're to get back to the postseason.

Well after a rough start at Baltimore (and he did get a win) and a rough 1st tonight, Jon turns it around to toss 6 quality innings against a damn good offensive team and pick up a big road win. Jon is now 8-0 in his last 10 starts, with the team 9-1 in those games, and moved to 12-3 while getting his ERA below 5 all the way to.......4.99!!

 

Way to bounce back Jon, you've been the stopper for nearly 2 months now and kudos to you for showing that you aren't a worthless piece of crap.

Garland (next to Widger) has been overall, probably the most hated White Sox on the club this year.

Maybe true. Not by me. I think he's great. I love the fact he appears to be a flake. His record is awesome. Hope he

can keep it up and Vaz and Freddie can make huge comebacks the rest of the way.

Let's face it, if Vaz and Fred continue to suck we're going nowhere, not to mention poor Mark's demise which hopefully

he turned the corner toward normalcy in his 5 inns vs. KC.
