What makes strikeouts overrated are the escalated pitch counts that follow on guys like Contreras that need to throw a lot of pitches for k's. There are certain guys like Johan that do not throw a lot of pitches and get k's...but those are rare. Look at Kerry Wood...he will get you 8 k's in 5 innings but then he is done.
