Y'all are treating this like KW is rewarding Ozzie with an extension when it's obviously a punishment. Ozzie wants to be fired. Ozzie isn't getting what he wants until he has a more successful season. KW's extension is telling Ozzie he better shape up or he is going to be stuck with teams like this seasons for many years to come.

That's a postively brilliant way to motivate someone.

Once again, a contract extension takes into consideration your career and track record as a manager, during both contract extensions I compared the manager's record. Wedge had ONE season of above .500 ball, Ozzie has a ring, 90 wins seasons and one horrible year which is basically 98 percent the players fault.

Bad record, GM/players fault all the way.

 

Good record, WS, totally the manager.

 

How about evaluating him based on more than a record? In game moves, handling of players, lineups, bullpens, etc.

And win or lose, the Sox have never had anyone as entertaining, fun and forthright as Ozzie. Who has?

Levine out scoops a lot of people. He reported the last extension for Ozzie days before other outlets and took heat because nobody else heard something and than turned out he was right.

You'd sure hate some of the other managers around the league then. I posted earlier in this thread as to how many White Sox players have exceeded expectations this year. For pitchers I came up with Jenks and possibly Wasserman (because Wasserman made the majors despite being a major underdog). Another poster said Vazquez which I mildly quibbled with as I felt Vazquez is merely meeting some long term expectations.

 

It's tough to look good when 80% of your pitching staff is basically underachieving and not doing the job.

 

Lest someone suggest I think Guillen is the be all end all, I don't. I question some of his outbursts and wearing his heart on his sleeve all the time. Granted that's his personality but I believe some of that stuff can backfire. Also I am concerned with all the hit and runs he does when he has players who strike out a lot. Just tonite it backfired twice. I understand trying to make things happen but he has the wrong players for what he's trying to do sometimes.

But seriously...he doesn't let their pitch count get crazy, protects Danks, does a fair enough job righty-lefty (old-school, to a point, but not bad) and works hard to let his pitchers know that he has their trust and support and they support and trust him.

29 and GP, yes I'd like to see Ozzie get players who can execute his style of ball. I like the overall OG baseball philosophy. It's vintage White Sox style ball, good pitching, speed and defense. The overall philosphy I like, the game day decisions sometimes drive me up the wall. I don't want to throw Ozzie under his own bus, but I don't want a big extension either. Let's see what happens next year when hopefully he can get some players that will execute properly, not murder the season like this bunch did.

I love Ozzie Guillen. But I really think they should've waited until they saw what he did with the pile of crap KW gave him to work with next year.

He should fire some assistants, however, to send a message.

This season isn't his fault, but it's still clear he's an atrocious manager, a nutcase, and is managing a team with the 2nd worst record in baseball. An extension now is beyond crazy.

He had a winning record. He never had the highest payroll in the division, Ozzie never has not had the highest payroll in the division. I just don't know why you have to extend him now. 2004: Sox payroll $51M, second to Minny's $55M, and CLE and DET were both around $49M, so they were pretty much on par with the Sox as well. The only team the Sox were way ahead of in payroll was KC.

 

Also, in 2005, the Sox were first but DET was only about $5M below them.

 

The gap wasn't significant until 2006, and even this year, DET is within $12M.

 

So let's not make it seem like Ozzie has been constantly given the ALC title giftwrapped.
