wait so... like... will i be getting $600 bux?

my 2007 income was probably around the $7-8k mark (college... yay) - and this $600 doesn't change according to how much you pay in taxes/make/etc? i'm just trying to figure out if i'm included in this whole thingamabob.

From that description, as long as you file a 2007 tax return, yes, you should get $600 back, and that will not change the amount you pay in taxes either of these years.

$300 would be fine with me. lol sweet. i think the stimulus was a terrible idea but hell, since it's happened i'm stoked about a little extra cash.

Going back to the same CNN piece, the cutoff point they draw between the $600 and the $300 is at about $3000. It may be interesting in that there may be a range where you get something between $300 and $600 depending on your overall income, the article is a bit unclear on that, it seems to depend on how much you actually owed last year and whether or not it was greater than zero.

I look at it this way.

Better to give me my money back than to give it to someone in another country whose own government should be taking care of them.

So, I have a dumb question. It says that if you don't owe income tax you will get less of a rebate. Does this mean that you will get a smaller rebate if you make less than what is taxable/that if you file when you don't NEED to because you made so little that you will get a smaller rebate? Or does this mean if you are already getting a refund because of the number of deductions you have taken you will get less of a rebate?

I don't think it's what you owe, it's what you already paid in... (or had withheld). All you are doing when you "owe" is "trueing up" what should have been withheld all year. If you made more then $3000, you'll be getting something back as long as no one else can claim you.

BTW, it is ALWAYS best to owe a teeny, tiny amount to the IRS, because that means you are maximizing your own money.

I wish I had a nickel for every person who's taxes I've done over the years that says "hu???" when I tell them this. They act like their refund is a gift from the g'ment. And these are not stupid people.. (well, most of them aren't). They just refuse to manage a savings account on their own despite the fact that the g'ment doesn't pay interest.

This year, I should take my own advice. I'm getting a FAT refund check, but it's because of all the credits I get for education and child care, even after doing the cafeteria plan for child care.

For 2008, I won't be so "lucky", now that Mrs. Kap is back home. :)

We adjusted nicely even though I have been home since August. We get something back every year, mainly because our charitable deductions vary from year to year, but it's not like the thousands some of the folks who's taxes I do get. It's crazy. I see these folks struggle all year long then rejoyce at a $10K refund. They don't understand that that's $800 more a month they could have during the year to make their lives more easy. :huh

so here's the question. at 21 years old and with my parents paying for some of my college, they can claim me as a dependent. BUT the tax credit for having kids in families only counts them up to age 17 so THEY won't be getting a check on my account. So the question I guess is where do I fit in? Does it mean that if my parents claim me as a dependent i WONT get the $?

so much for economic stimulus :lolhitting

I prefer getting the large check back instead of bits and pieces throughout the year. I use it generally better when its a lump sum in the spring/now.
