Biggest Series in Chicago History?

Can you think of any other series in Chicago history bigger than this one?

In regular season history, of course.

And I'm not saying a series in which we clinch the division when we're up by 8 games.

I mean a real, meaningful series.

Considering two Chicago clubs are in first place and deservedly so ... I say this is the biggest series in Chicago regular season history.

Couple of requests:

Somebody who goes to all three games ... please keep track of all the fights in and outside of the park.

Also to those Sox fans who normally don't go to Wrigley, please post things that annoy you about the park and let us know if it's as dirty as people claim.

Well that's White Sox history... I think this is as far as all of Chicago goes?

That leads me to believe he's questioning whether its bigger than any series any Chicago team has been in during the regular season. If I'm right in this assumption, I definitely think that any of the series down the stretch in '05 were much more important.

another sox fan putting undeserved relevance into the sox/cubs rivalry

this series isn't anymore important than the pirates series we just finished, we need to win to keep the twins in second place

there's nothing more important about it, and no other underlying themes that need to be examined. let the media do all that garbage

I wouldn't go as far as history. The World Series was the most important series in chicago history.

As far as Wrigley behavior. Well it should be interesting. Last year the animals were at their fevered peak of angst locating every sox fan they could to either start a fight, throw a beer or taunt. I look forward to a repeat of last year when some fat drunken trixie in a Kerry Wood half shirt, calls my CIO and I a name and throws a beer our way. That and the socio-economic taunts are great. Nothing like some college kid who works at McDonalds on weekends throwing money barbs at strangers because we happen to be wearing sox apparel. I look forward to the 100 year anniversary of mopes coming out. I hope we get a nice victory so I dont have to hear the drunken morons singing their go cubs go beer song. The only other entertainment value is going to the local bars afterwards to see rogues gallery of drunks and drunk comedy.

No I meant regular season history so the great WS series and playoff series don't count, nor all the playoff victories.

I agree some of those Sept. series in our title year were probably bigger because the division lead was dwindling away.

Of course the series in KC in 1969 (or was it 67) when the Sox s*** their pants was a huge series, costing the team the pennant.

But in terms of a big regular season series, this has to be right up there with the biggest in history in terms of one complete series, not just a game to clinch the division or something.

It's a regular series in the middle of the year against a non-divisional opponent. Sure, it might be big for Chicago bragging rights, but in terms of actual baseball, this series means just as much as if we were playing any other division leader in the National League.

True, Felix.

Even if we lost all 3 that really wouldn't impact whether we win the division or not.

Big bragging rights as you say.

That' wild the Flubs lost all 3 to the Rays.

I wonder if they'll be reeling or if those losses won't matter to them at all.

It'd be nice to win Game One of this set, real nice.

This series can create a lot of momentum if you do really well (ie sweep), but with the series on back to back weekends and not spread apart, the only way this series creates momemtum is if somebody goes 5-1 or 6-0, and neither team will. Other than momentum, the series means little because it's not even within the AL and each game still counts for only one. Other than that, the only meaning this has is not hearing stupid Cub fans s***, and it's nice to do well against good teams.

Then again, this is as bi-polar a Sox team (well, offense I guess I should say) as I've ever seen, so momemtum is overrated in the case of this team anyways IMO, and it could be argued it's overrated in general. A wise man once said "momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher".

I truly, 100% believe, that point is severely underrated by a greater portion of the board. I've pretty much felt, other than when the Sox were garbage, that this was the greatest rivalry in baseball. Cubs fans always make this out to be a big deal, and when the Sox are competing, it's a big deal to Sox fans too. Sox fans should treat it this way as well.

Just an opinion...it has become lessened since 2005, but I feel the point still remains...show the Cubs that the AL is not the b**** the NL is and take 5 of 6. Prove that we are still and always will be the superior baseball team.

Oh yeah, and carry on that regular season momentum...I guess that is pretty important too.

I don't believe it's truly underrated around here, I just believe it's understated. The fragile Sox fan psyche has an amazing inherent capacity for self-preservation, and denying the importance of the intangibles attached to these games is part of it.

These series are big -- to maintain the division lead, to keep momentum up, as a huge mental shot in the arm to the players, and for fan pride and bragging rights and the attendant team support that comes along with it.

When the Sox take 4 of 6 I'll be happy, and you all back home will get a rest from loudmouth Cub fans for a while.

That is classic.

Its funny how some newly graduated kid yells at me and tells me im poor because im wearing a Sox shirt in wrigleyville.

Didn't the Cubs play a one game playoff to get into the playoffs in 1998? To me that would be the biggest series. This series is fun and all, but you have to pick a September series where the playoffs are on the line for the biggest.

Yep and Gary Gaetti hit a home run to help them win.

Any of the series down the stretch in 2005 were much more important (especially the series in Chicago against Cleveland), given how hot Cleveland was an how cold we were.

I have to agree with this one. The series where we lost 2 of 3 to Cleveland but where our 3rd baseman had a couple of good swings, followed up by the series where we took 2/3 from Minnesota and the only game we lost was a 2-1 game where BMac dueled Santana to a draw and we followed up with 2 wins to turn momentum around, I'll take those.

Personally, I see this series as nothing but bragging rights for fans in the city, which doesn't mean a whole lot in the long run. Do you really think Cubs fans would care if they got swept in this series but still made the playoffs and advanced in them? Do you think you would care if the Cubs swept the Sox in this series and the Sox still made the playoffs? I know I wouldn't.

Frankly, I hate this series. It brings out the idiots in both fan bases and people seem to forget how to be civil human beings. I know I'm in the minority thinking this, and I can see why people like this series. Personally, I like rivalries and this one could be a good one, but people get way too caught up in it for me to enjoy it at all (which is why I generally try to avoid the boards during these series, otherwise I'd just get too pissed off).

Biggest series between the two Chicago teams, yes since both teams are at the top of their divisions while facing one another for once.

Biggest Chicago series, no.
