June 28, 200916 yr Our highest rating fielder (for those who are qualified) according to RZR with .886 is....... Jermaine Dye, ha. Konerko's next on .875. Next best is Alexei with .817, which shows you how much of a drop-off there is. They also lead the AL in UER with 41, and have only made 191 plays OOZ, while the AL average is 218. At least Beckham has been a slight upgrade on Fields (who was woeful with a RZR of .659 ouch), but Beck's still pretty subpar compared to other third baseman. However Pods has a .914 RZR in LF and a .958 RZR in CF, so he has been a pleasent surprise.
June 28, 200916 yr I know that Konerko doesnt have much if any range, but if it is within his range he has picked it this year. i couldnt believe that was his 1st error yesterday, but he has had some pretty great stops so far this season
June 28, 200916 yr The fielding percentage would be a few points lower if not for Konerko. Alexei Ramirez should be especially thankful.
June 28, 200916 yr The amazing stat for the Sox this year is 43 unearned runs. They gave up 53 in all of 2005.

I find it interesting that every place other than baseball reference has the sox with with 43 unearned runs given up... while baseball reference has them at 41 runs given up. Every other stat matches up perfectly across the board. Odd.
June 28, 200916 yr The Sox' defensive efficiency rating is 13th in baseball though... Edited June 28, 200916 yr by chw42
June 28, 200916 yr QUOTE (qwerty @ Jun 28, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) I find it interesting that every place other than baseball reference has the sox with with 43 unearned runs given up... while baseball reference has them at 41 runs given up. Every other stat matches up perfectly across the board. Odd. The could be counting them by team instead of individual pitcher, which can be two different totals. For example. A starting pitcher is in for a two out error. The manager brings in a reliever, who promptly gives up a two run homer. The two runs are uneared for the team total, but the reliever does get an earned run for his own total by giving up the homer. Its an oddity.
June 28, 200916 yr I bet most of our errors have come in the past 2 weeks-month. It seems like every game we've played this month, we've had 2-3 errors in it.
June 28, 200916 yr Pretty much knew coming into the season that defense would be a season-long issue. Other than Konerko and to a lesser extent Dye, it's been pretty bad. And this isn't even getting into the chronic problem we have when it comes to holding and throwing out runners. Edited June 28, 200916 yr by Jordan4life
June 28, 200916 yr QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 28, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) Pretty much knew coming into the season that defense would be a season-long issue. Other than Konerko and to a lesser extent Dye, it's been pretty bad. And this isn't even getting into the chronic problem we have when it comes to holding and throwing out runners. The difference is...it's actively getting worse. A month or two ago this same team had a 10 game errorless streak.
June 28, 200916 yr And consider this: right now the Sox have the second best ERA in the AL. Bad defense and great pitching...hmm.

June 29, 200916 yr QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 28, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) how the hell did this happen? Our starting pitchers and bullpen have been really good. And we've given up the most unearned runs in baseball, which pushes down your ERA (Hi Bartolo!)
June 29, 200916 yr The Royals' defense is horrid. Sometimes the official scorer helps them out, though. They are Keystone Copish again this year.
