SoxNet.net has looked to it's sister site, FutureSox.com to break down the youngsters heading to Chicago as part of the Thome and Contreras trades.

 

Thome and Cash for Justin Fuller

 

This move had more to do with financial savings and sending Thome to a contender than it did prospects. Fuller is a 26 year-old middle infielder who hasn't made it past high-a ball. Combine that with a career .244 average and we are talking about a pure organizational guy with zero upside.

 

Jose Conteras for Cash and Brandon Hynick:

 

The Sox got surprising value for Contreras. While I think every Sox fan owes Jose a thank-you for the 2005 season, we should also thank Kenny for acquiring Brandon Hynick. Hynick isn't a can't miss prospect and he might not pan out, but he is a guy that possesses an above average change-up, very good composure, and the ability to develop into a potential back of the rotation starter.More

Following tonight's 4-1 loss, both Jim Thome and Jose Contreras have been traded in a final-hour waiver-wire deal; Thome to the Dodgers and Contreras to the Rockies.

While Thome was of greater value to the Sox this season, it was actually Contreras who landed the Sox more in return. The White Sox received minor league right-handed pitcher Brandon Hynick, who in 26 starts (155 innings) posted a 3.83 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 92/48.

 

Thome, and cash went to the Dodgers for minor league infielder Justin Fuller, who is 26 and in single-A. So essentially that deal was one to get Thome a chance to play in the playoffs. Surely the Dodgers weren't going to give a lot for a DH that will only serve as a pinch-hitter for them.

 

First Reaction

 

The White Sox traded two guys that really had no spot on the 2010 team, did so at the last possible moment, and landed themselves an above-average pitching prospect that could be fighting for a rotation spot in March. Both are good moves. Thome wasn't going to bring back any value unless an AL team expressed interest. As soon as the possibilities shifted to the NL, his value dropped. Contreras, meanwhile, still has an arm capable of shutting guys down, especially now in the NL against players who have had little little experience against him, if any at all.

 

 

Both guys will probably be headed to Charlotte to fill out their roster for the remainder of the season with rosters expanding. They won't be able to join any of the playoff teams.

OK, I see how they got very damn good value for Contreras, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this Hynick guy will never turn into anything good.

He could be a solid BP arm (Carrasco type role) a strong #4 type starter, or like you said.. nothing. I really like his arm though, his changeup is very good and he's very smart. Hopefully we can take him to some interleague play as well.. I like his chances though. Not too many pitchers pitch well in the PCL.

Cowley is also tweeting that Pods will get the bulk of the at bats at DH. However, I expect that will change as September wears on (if the Sox fall out further) and we'll see a lot more of T-Flow.

I was quite impressed Kenny flipped Contreras for anything with any upside.

 

Thome was dealt for absolutely nothing...I guess this opens up the door for Dye to DH next year, or possibly Flowers? If Konerko is on the team he remains at 1st base, because despite his lackluster ranger, he plays the position quite well otherwise.

Stunned we got anything for Jose.

 

If this guy can be a fifth starter or middle reliever, it's a plus.

 

But a 26 year old in A ball is a guy who will never see charlotte, much less Chicago.

 

So it goes. Morel or Dayan will be the 3B eventually.

The offensive side of this team is going to see a dramatic shift next year.

Hynick sounds like he could be another Carlos Silva. Great value for Contreras because he looks like trade bait for a worthwhile player.

 

The Thome deal makes a ton of sense because the Sox can now offer him a market-value FA contract during the FA period, so they don't have to worry about denying arb and losing him should Thome want to test the market. This move actually increases the likelihood of Thome coming back, and of course it will be great for Thome if he can get to the playoffs again. But what I don't understand is why organizational minor leaguers are exchanged in these things. I know it's all for show so the stupid fans think they got something in return, but is it really so important to do that? It's the same as in the Carlos Lee deal where we got Pods and Vizcaino, but then some organizational guy was a throw-in to make it seem better. Kind of pointless IMO.

Don't know if this was already said but the LA Times reports the Sox picked up $1.4M of Thome's remaining $2.4M salary.

 

At least we saved SOME money.

 

The DBacks paid ALL of Garlands remaining 2009 salary.

 

 

The funny thing is I heard Keith Law saying that the Contreras move would have the biggest impact on a contender and in a positive way.
