I imagine quite of these quotes are taken out of order, and that the firing quote came right in the middle of it. Not that it matters a ton, just that I imagine that's probably how it happened.

 

And it is also Cowley trying to start s*** up. He likes doing that, even if this is newsworthy.

 

I do think Walker has worn out his welcome, but he is going to be apart of the equation next year, and I do imagine he will be on the hot seat.

I don't really blame our lackluster offense on Greg Walker, but at some point he has to be held accountable for the poor offenses we have seen. If nothing else, it may do some good just to have a new approach being taken in the clubhouse.

Oh, that was a really good article I thought. Some interesting info in regards to him having met with Beckham and the plans to fly out and meet with Quentin and Rios. Sounds like he's going to meet with Rios twice.

That's exactly what it sounds like to me. It will be really interesting to see who is not back next year. That probably tells us who they are talking about.

The thread title is misleading as Walker said he probably would have been fired. As far as the reasons for underachieving, I don't know if they were attitudes or what, but I thinking age, injury and one dimensional players. While a good coach can make a difference, and I think Walker is a good coach, you want to make a coach look good, get better players. He said he's the best man for the job, and obviously the organization agrees. You can have the best manager who ever lived, best hitting coach who ever lived, best pitching coach who ever lived, best first and third base coaches who ever lived, best bench coach who ever lived and give them the Washington Nationals roster, they are still going to suck. You can pick out any 6 or 7 guys on Soxtalk, and make them the on field staff for the Yankees and they are still going to make the playoffs.

While it's true that people on Soxtalk could probably coach the Yankees to the playoffs, the Yankees also spend $200+ mill and have talent up the ass. There are middle of the pack teams every year that get to the playoffs though and the coaches in those spots do wonders for those teams. The Rockies this past year might not have won 80 games with Soxtalk managing them, and instead won 92. The White Sox in 2005 probably wouldn't have made the playoffs if not for the job Don Cooper did bringing that pitching staff back together, and I think you have to give some credit to Greg Walker for resurrecting the career of Jermaine Dye. The Sox offenses the past few years have been anywhere from inconsistent and mundane to inconsistent but explosive, and a lot of that has to do with Greg Walker.

 

Like I said, I think Walker might be coaching his last year in Chicago, but he does serve a purpose and he has done a little good for the White Sox.

That's my point. A lot of people here think coaches can get players to do things they cannot do. If Dewayne Wise or Brent Lillibridge is leading off and Corky Miller is batting 6th, unless you are playing in some beer league someplace, chances are you aren't going to score a lot of runs, and its not because of the hitting coach.

Jumped out at me also. I always dislike the "secret stuff happening that makes this ok" response. Same in Washington, etc. Plus, like it or not, fair or unfair, Walker, like all coaches, is tasked with getting the most out of each unique player. The best coaches do not have a "there is only one way to do it, and that is my way" approach. They adapt and find the best path for each player. My untrained eye hasn't seen that under Walker.

I think Greg Walker works his ass off and that is why he is still here. Same with Cora and Cooper.

Great observation. He always seemed like someone with a strong worth ethic. But there are thousands of guys who would work their ass off for that job. That doesn't mean they are the right person for the job. And if the team is going to make a change, do it soon. I've never been a middle of the season shake up fan.

The hiring of McGwire by St. Louis proves how meaningless hitting coaches are. McRae has a good hitting philosophy and they let him go. What is McGwire going to teach?? Uppercut, try to hit every pitch out of the park. And of course take enhancers?

McGwire, like many (most) sluggers, tried to hit every pitch a mile. That was his hitting philosophy. All or nothing for Mark.

LaRussa better hope the millionaire has a good work ethic, cause it seems to me hitting coaches are grunt boys: Make sure the players have their tapes ready, schedule extra BP, etc. What the heck is McGwire going to teach any hitter??
