December 30, 200916 yr What about a non-slugger for DH? Winn anyone? He can run (20-25sb) Plays good defense (16.5UZR in 2009) Switch hits Batted .370 with 2outs and RISP in 2009 (61 PAs) Batted .316/.360 in innings 7-9 (when our offense is normally asleep) Batted .319/.370 with RISP (142PAs) Batted .295/.345obp/.749ops on the road He excelled more towards the bottom of the lineup and I think with a better offense like the White Sox he could drive in alot more runs than he did with SF. He'd cost $2-$5M, 1 year.

Yet with the lineup currently constructed, no LH power besides Teahen and AJ, the sox need someone who can hit 20+ HR's and hit well off of RHP.

Not sure how many HRs he could hit but his OPS is pretty solid.

December 30, 200916 yr Sign Matt Holliday and make CQ DH.. PK's off the books next year so i think it's possible.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) Sign Matt Holliday and make CQ DH.. PK's off the books next year so i think it's possible. I have no interest in going after Holliday at anything close to the cost he'll get.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) I have no interest in going after Holliday at anything close to the cost he'll get. We're not paying for him and our payroll would still under 120mil.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) We're not paying for him and our payroll would still under 120mil. Yeah but Scott Boras is his agent isn't he? With the exception of Andruw Jones, the Sox won't deal with Boras, right?
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 08:28 PM) Sign Matt Holliday and make CQ DH.. PK's off the books next year so i think it's possible. Then we would all want to get rid of him after a couple of years and declining production, just like Konerko, but ALOT more expensive.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 08:15 PM) A .751 OPS against RHP isn't what I'd call pretty solid. What would be considered acceptable? .800+?
December 30, 200916 yr I can't believe anyone is offering Holliday that kind of money, crazy, just crazy. As I've said before, still hoping for Delgado if he is healthy.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) We're not paying for him and our payroll would still under 120mil. The Sox payroll has never been above $110 mill. Why would they suddenly go close to $120 mill? QUOTE (striker @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) What would be considered acceptable? .800+? Atleast. You'd prefer better. .750 is league average. Scott Podsednik put up a .750 OPS, and I don't ever want to see him as the full-time DH, do you?
December 30, 200916 yr I know highly unlikely, but if the Sox got Holliday, attendence, wins, and playoff chances go way up. Which equals the revenue to pay him. If we're out of it in a few years, they can always trade him unless he turns into garbage (highly unlikely)... but I still see STL signing him. Pierre CF Beckham 2B Holliday RF Quentin DH Konerko 1B Ramirez SS AJP C Rios CF Teahen 3B Now that I will bet on a WSox world series... and they may need that to compete with Yankees, Redsox, Mariners, Angels, even Tampa Bay. The AL will have some elite teams this year.
December 30, 200916 yr QUOTE (striker @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) What would be considered acceptable? .800+? With Guerrero, Thome, and Delgado available, yeah I'd say .800+ I mean a DH is a unique opportunity to pay less for a one dimensional player. We can get a guy that hits well and not worry about his defense. You want to rotate bench outfielders? Rotate them. In the outfield. Winn is decent but he's best as an outfielder. If we got him and put him at DH, we might as well just use Kotsay all year.

Playing him at DH would be fairly idiotic.

December 31, 200916 yr QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) Here's something that may surprise you, Jim Thome's OPS with the White Sox when he was 36-39 was exactly the same as Matt Holliday's career OPS. Not surprising to me. Jim Thome has to be the most disrespected (good player) in the history of Soxtalk. It baffles me the number of "anybody but Thome" posts I've seen of late. That leads me to believe most people just want to see something different, regardless of if it's a legitimate upgrade or not, at DH in 2010.

Somebody on here, I'm too drunk to remember who, said they didn't want Thome back because his OPS was like .471 with the Dodgers last year. THAT WAS IN 17 AT BATS!!! Pathetic.
December 31, 200916 yr I thought the day he was traded, and I still think today, that Thome will be our DH. Where else is there a better fit? Where else is he going to want to go? There are exactly 14 teams where he can play. We need a left handed power bat and have an opening at DH. He's not going to the Yankees or Red Sox or Angels- the teams with the biggest checkbooks. He is 39 years old and his top priorities would sure seem to be (aside from playing because he loves playing) winning a World Series and getting 600 home runs. Is Thome the guy who would sign for 1 or 2 million more with Toronto or Kansas City and have absolutely zero chance of going to the playoffs? When waiving his no-trade from the Phillies, he would only accept going back to Cleveland, or playing in Chicago close to home. I will be quite surprised if we don't sign him.

December 31, 200916 yr QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 09:24 PM) Supposedly the Tigers have some interest. That would be very disappointing to me. I don't know if Ozzie just refuses to have this guy on the roster, or if Jimmy has higher demands that we think, but having the Tigers make the smart move by signing a cheap, productive LH bat would really rub me the wrong way.
December 31, 200916 yr QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 08:24 PM) Supposedly the Tigers have some interest. Yep. He was spotted at a hotel in Detroit this week. I don't think too many people visit Detroit during the winter for pleasure.
