He must hate him? Geezus... This is how rumors start.

No... Ozzie does NOT hate Thome. He repeatedly over and over talks about how much respect he (and the entire organization) has for Thome.

The bottom line is that he (and probably Kenny) felt they didn't want to disrespect Thome by bringing him back for a pittance this season after the big contract he had here... and then have him only play in a reserve role. They felt it would be an uncomfortable situation for everyone.

In situations like that, it's easier to have someone move on and let the new team make that decision.

The mistake the Sox made was in thinking Thome's skills might be diminishing more/faster than they have.

So then why did Jim take a next to nothing deal to play in a DH platoon for the Twins?

The mistake Ozzie Guillen made was in thinking Thome was a poor fit for this team compared to Mark Kotsay because on-base percentage is nothing compared to flexibility.

Fixed.

Unfortunately that was a huge mistake.

If the choice was letting him go to a team out of the Division, it would have been much easier to accept.

Letting him to go to Minnesota stung at the time and still stings. Once it was clear he was going there, the Sox should

have given in and brought him back.

If we had resigned Thome though, there might not have been a roster spot for Kotsay

But he's so f***ing flexible! What would we do without an average **** bat, an average 1B glove, and a guy who can't play OF any more.

Before the game, wasn't Ozzie saying something about how he couldn't have Thome on this roster?

What a joke he is at times (when it comes to his stupid man-crushes)

99 percent of the people on here didnt want Thome back while watching him last season. Hindsight is a fun game.

But we all assumed he would be replaced by a major league bat and not Mark Kotsay.

Hey, I'm still mad we didn't go with the Branyan/Gomes platoon for like 3 million.

And they tried and got outbid. Sometimes players dont automatically want to come to the Sox. In fact at the deadline, KW tried AGAIN to bring a serious bat into the lineup, once again denied.

Yeah I liked that idea at the time. Matsui was very close to joining us and we were in on Vlad at one point as well. Berkman would have been nice but he wanted to spoon with Pettite. It sucks, but thats the way it is.

If you don't have a suitable replacement lined up then don't get rid of him.
