Crawford was a 6.8 WAR player this season. That is outstanding. (Konerko was a 4.2)

He's worth $20M per.

 

By this logic guys like Adrian Beltre and Jose Bautista are worth 20 million. I love the WAR stat. But no way in hell Crawford is worth 20 million.

I'm not surprised that the Sox are "targeting" Crawford. Why wouldn't they? The trouble is, like many other posters have said, the Sox most likely cannot compete with a few other teams out there that would spend a lot more to get him. The Sox may very well make an offer, and they may actually offer more years than they typically do. But, I can't see them offering more than $12-$15 million per season. A few other teams out there wouldn't hesitate to offer $18 million+ a year for 4 or 5 years.

 

Someone else mentioned that Dunn would be a nice consolation prize. Absolutely, but he'd want to play 1st base. Maybe the Sox will go after him as their new 1st baseman. That would probably mean Paulie's not coming back though. Can you imagine how small Dunn would make the Cell look? Wow.

Has Crawford ever even played RF? His arm isn't very well suited for it and I seem to remember years ago he was reluctant to play CF. Even if the Sox felt he could play RF despite his arm I'm not sure if Crawford would be that receptive to doing it.

If they acquired Crawford, and I believe that is a gigantic longshot, the Sox have not given another team's FA more than $20 million total in 14 years, I think he would play LF, Pierre CF and Rios RF, assuming that didn't mean the end of Alex Rios with the White Sox. Oney hinted in his tweets the White Sox may get what he termed a "real" CF. I thought Rios was fine, but apparently Ozzie projects him more as a RF.

If they acquired Crawford, and I believe that is a gigantic longshot, the Sox have not given another team's FA more than $20 million total in 14 years, I think he would play LF, Pierre CF and Rios RF, assuming that didn't mean the end of Alex Rios with the White Sox. In addition, Crawford's high WAR number is largely due to his fantastic defense. That's fine and dandy, but the White Sox are absolutely starved for offense, and those are the numbers they should be most concerned with, especially if it costs 20% of your payroll.

Crawford was actually really good offensively this year, and you may be able to assume more offense from him moving from a great pitchers park to a hitters park. He actually is beginning to remind me more and more of Johnny Damon as he goes along, but I think he's better too.

I'd be willing to bet that Crawford wouldn"t sign with the Sox even if they were the highest bidder.

Haven't the Sox done this before, throwing the name of a big name free agent out there for the media to jump all over? Inevitably, the Sox offer is rebuffed but management can say that "they went hard after that guy". This is more of a PR stunt than anything else.

Has it occured to anyone, through all the anger, that PART of the reason we fall short on free agents is that the team is willing to pay what they see as the value of the player, and not overpay? That its an organizational philosophy? Because I find that much more likely than the idea that they do it for publicity. Well sure, if they do fall short, they want to spin it that way. That's after the fact. But the idea that it is the prime motivation just seems ridiculous to me.

Losing Quentin and Konerko and replacing them with Crawford does not sound like a good idea. I love the people that say the White Sox are cheap yet they can have a $100M while being cheap.

 

Do they want Crawford, I am sure they do. Will they overpay to get him, no. Will Sox fans be pissed that they did not overpay, yes.

 

I am really glad they did not sign Hunter, Fukodome and Alphonso Soriano, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt.
