Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox

If they are "all in" like Williams states I really do not see a place for Viciedo on this team. In fact I think Viciedo will eventually be traded to get bullpen help. Morel will be the only "chance" player we take. Morel has true defensive skills he will stick. If Konerko doesn't resign, Lee might be the next target as you get a veteran, decent defensive player who is a good locker room guy. I do like the beltre Idea but I have no idea how this guy is in the locker room.

I'm not against trading Viciedo. But not for bullpen help. That would be a pretty crummy return for a kid you threw a major league contract at.

Heyman tweeted tonight he predicts PK returns to the ChiSox next week at the meetings.

Heyman is probably just making an educated guess though. It would make sense that he'd come back, but I am wondering how serious Konerko is about exploring other possibilites. Obviously, he wants to see what his options are next week at the winter meetings, but is there a team or dollar amount that would cause Konerko to leave? Also, are other teams interested in Konerko going to go full throttle after him because of the perception that he's likely headed back to Chicago.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:43 AM)
I love Beltre. But his agent is Boras and he's looking for I believe 5 years.

Hence longshot all things considered. Who knows, JR keeps "finding" this money, maybe he can start dealing with Boras.

Beltre seems like a good fit and I agree with you quick that if they are all in, Viciedo won't be starting. He could be dealt, but I think it is more likely that he gets a good chunk of ab's from the bench.

The reason I don't believe the Sox will even come close with Beltre is that he's already got a 5 year deal on the table (from Oakland) at big money and I can't see the Sox going that long-term on a deal now that they have inked Dunn.

To me, if the Sox could get 2 relievers plus Lee or just Paulie, I'd be perfectly fine with Lee as long as whatever slowed him last season isn't something that will never heal. I'd also be exstatic with Paulie coming back but I have to hope the Sox have resources to fill their pen because right now our pen is scary bad or at least scary unproven.

If the Sox pull off signing Dunn and keeping Konerko it'd be epic.

Yes! I am keeping my fingers crossed that we resign PK

At this point 3B is still an option for Viciedo

If Paulie says no, how about going after Beltre to play 3B and making Viciedo the firstbaseman. Its a longshot all things considered, but may be even a better answer than Paulie if Viciedo is legit.

I like Beltre, I like his glove. I don't like what he's going to get paid though. He's had two GREAT seasons at the dish and they were both contract years. He's got a solid stick the rest of the time but at $12-15 million, just kinda insane imo.

He's had two years where his ops was over .900

I suppose I do not see Viciedo as a great player.... Ever. In fact I would say the sox made a mistake with him. If I had my choice at least defensively I would take morel and let him work things out. Viciedo cannot hit a curve ball and he is suppose to be a top slugger. Don't see it, if it means a decent relief pitcher I would part with him today. Just my opinion.

That would be societies negative connotation dear sir... I however - have no issues with midgets, thank you kindly.

decent relievers are a dime a dozen. I wouldn't deal a 21-year-old who posted a plus-.800 OPS for some reliever.

Very interested to see how many years they include: if it's anywhere more than 2 years, we might see Viciedo traded.

I understand your point. I think we are evaluating Viciedo differently, which is just fine. The biggest hole right now is the bullpen, its not even first base as I think they can fill that position better than getting a real solid bullpen. Still, Konerko will be signed and then we will see how many good dime a dozen relievers we can find.

Ken_Rosenthal Konerko not meeting #WhiteSox tom. Just his agent, Craig Landis, will. Agree with @SI_Jon Heyman deal will get done. But not close yet. #MLB

I just somehow think PK is tired of the Ozzie-drama. I think he will come back, but he is a bit intrigued with playing in a less crazy environment. He'll look at other settings. I think it's more about this than the $$$, though $$$ obviously still matter. I want him back & am glad KW, with JR's open blessing, is openly courting PK and has openly structured AJP's & AD's contracts to for PK.

I'd prefer a 3B without stone hands, and more range than a parked car.

Morel ought to be option 1 at 3b, Vizquel platooning with someone ought to be option 2. Teahen or Lillibridge ought to be the panic option.

Viciedo just doesn't belong there. Maybe, if you played him there the whole year at AAA, he'd get better. He has the arm to handle the spot, but he needs to work on all the rest, and moving back and forth between positions won't help. He ought to be a starting 1b somewhere, either Charlotte, Chicago, or someone else's big league team, for the full year next year.

I don't know... Can't have too many Flintstone-mobiles parked at the hot corner. We have two.

Complete agreement. Seems fairly obvious to me that the job is Morel's to lose. Omar is indeed a fallback option as well.

If Konerko is resigned, Dayan needs to be thrown into a corner OF spot to see if he can handle it (in AAA). Either that or he's trade bait, which I have no issue with.

If Konerko does re-sign, then Viciedo should be traded. Morel seems like a good short term answer at 3b--Omar and Teahen if Morel gets hurt/ starts poorly[good glove, decent RH bat, not much power but don't need it with Dunn, Pk et al] Dayan is the 4th option at 3b. He's got value that would be wasted in AAA or the bench after he showed decent AB's in the bigs in Sept.

The next thing would be to re-sign Putz.

Let's be honest though, Dayan Viciedo could benefit a lot from 1 more full season in AAA, especially if he's getting at bats every day and playing a position in the field every day. The problem comes if you have to sign Konerko and Dunn for 3-4 years each; Dayan Viciedo does not need to sit in AAA for 3 years waiting on them.

I'd say Morel's more of a long term answer at 3b than a short term answer. He may well struggle at it next year, but he really does belong there.

The sox would need to offer putz close to 5 million to stay. If they were going to do that they would have done it already, but I agree he should be on there top priority list.

Well part is how I interpret decent relievers. I see a decent reliever being one that post a 3.50-4.00 ERA, which I believe are a dime a dozen.
