i went with Thor. Think Sale, as good as his stuff is, might have some wildness problems still, nothing major, but something that a team that will potentially be gunning for a division title might not want to deal with.

 

It's not a bad problem to have if Ozzie and the org don't turn it into a problem by having rotating closer. I want to see a closer from day one established and it's that guys job to lose

a) Thornton deserves a shot. I know "deserves" is a weird word to use when the ultimate goal is to win, but I think the way you handle personnel issues like promotions speaks volumes about your club from a player's perspective. It's a dramatic enough front office, but if they handle things in a fair manner, people will still want to play here and still be motivated.

 

b ) I don't know whether this is true or not, or whether it's in the plans, but it seems like Sale would have more of an opportunity for multi-inning outings if he's not relegated to the 9th. Might keep him more stretched out in the case of injury or for when he hits the rotation.

 

PS this is all ceterus paribus; they're both fine options, so little details will sway the decision.

I think the fact that Thornton is on the same schedule as our opening day starter gives a clue that Thornton will at least get the first shot at closer.

He's a soldier who has requested his shot and deserves it. I trust in Sale to take over what we lose in Matt for the prior setup innings.

I think it should be thornton. If its sale, I am taking that to mean that Coop thinks his long term role is at closer, and not as a starter. Id hope the kid could be a starter, as it seems he has 3+ pitches,

It should be Sale, but I think it will be Thornton.

 

I just think Thornton is more suited for the 7th or 8th inning when he's facing a couple of lefties. But I'm not too worked up about this issue. If Thornton tanks as a closer, they have a lot of options...and I don't think they'll waste a lot of time if things go sour in April.

I'm in the " if it ain't broke don't fix" it camp. Thorton in 8th ,Sale in 9th. Not 100% sure of that opinion though. I can see the Sox giving closing opportunities to a 4 man committee of Thorton, Sale, Santos and Crain depending who 's coming up or who is freshest.

I just feel with the back end of the pen we have we should just do what's best each game. Every guy should be ready to go whether it's the 6th or the 9th.

Not happening. You see how chicken s*** the Rangers are. They're so scared that Feliz will be scarred for life if they remove him from the closer role they'll cheat themselves, Feliz and their fans. Once Sale establishes himself, and I believe he will, in whatever relief role he's put in, he'll be there to stay. But don't fear. Jacob Petricka, Jimmy Gallagher, and Dylan Axelrod are here.

Are you trying to say that there's not at least a 50/50 chance that if Sale flourishes in relief that come spring 2012 we won't hear something like “Well you know, Chris did a really good job in his role last year. It might not be fair to him to move him to the rotation” or “It'd be kinda risky to increase his innings by such a substantial amount so soon.” That'd be right up Ozzie and Coop's alley.

Don't you think that all of these teams want to win. The coaches will get fired if they don't win. They will put the player where they think they have the best chance to win. Maybe Texas thinks that he will lose to much of his stuff as a starter and will not be as effective. The Sox may think that Sale is more effective throwing 99 out of the pen instead of 94 in the rotation. I don't know any of this for fact but there are two sides.

The Rays certainly didn't do that with Price. Though to be fair he had only spent a little over a month in the 'pen in '08. Either way, I don't expect Sale to be a starter.
