Enough with the hyperbole

Featured Replies

J4L, I don't think it's a big deal to cut back on the "JP sucks" and just add a little reasoning as to why you are complaining about it. I'm as bad as anyone at times, as I've said he should be "euthanized" or "shot", which is crossing a line.

Just keep on keeping on, I think you are taking this way too personally. I know it wasn't directed at you alone, and yet you are now making it all about you. Instead of saying "Juan Pierre sucks", say "Jeez, I am sick and f***ing tired of Juan Pierre coming up to bat with 2 on and less than 2 outs because he's utterly useless in these situations."

Correct me if I'm wrong, moderators, but I believe that's your whole point. Those two statements above are largely the same, but the latter leads towards discussion while the former just adds fuel to the meathead fire.

Examples of hyperbole are:

Its a 3-1 game, White Sox are winning:

"Sox will never win"

There are a ton of posts in a thread that is just simply asking that people stop being so damn snarky and petty, that maybe approach the board with a better attitude for the enjoyment of all.

As Ive said previously, Ill defend anyones right to say their opinion, but that doesnt mean I wont think they are a complete asshat if they post like one. It really isnt that hard.

Um, OK? Again, continuous swearing, personal attacks on posters or players? No problem. Being told how you're allowed to express yourself concerning player/team performance or else? That's a totally separate issue.

You've been here a long time and have never struck me before as the kind of poster you've become this season. Do you yourself sense a change in the tone of your posts this season? Is this the first season you've been disgusted by this team?

Instead of me reading 10 pages, can someone give more examples of what hyperbole is?

So, instead of me saying "JUAN PIERRE SUCKS ASS," instead just say "Pierre is horrible. Ozzie needs to sit his ass down"?

This entire organization is an unmitigated f***ing DISASTER. We are looking at YEARS of futility and mediocrity and if you think otherwise you're wiping kool-aid off your chin. This season was over the day they stepped off the plane in Cleveland.

This is 100% true.

I've read through the thread. And I've come to the same conclusion. Now I have to worry about getting suspended if I say something as trivial as "Adam Dunn sucks" after another 0/4, 3K game.

I don't think this is all about you man. I'm guilty too, probably everyone is, no?

I think I explained this in "The old guys" thread Tex made a while back. My tone towards this team and organization in general have flip-flopped going back to last year. I didn't wake up one day and say "I hate the White Sox!" But I'm not going to get into that and I'm not going to drag this on in here any longer. Just makin' my opinion known. The mods/admins are going to do what they want to do. And that's fine.

That's a terrible example.

The problem with the White Sox and the cause for the hyperbole is simple.

The White Sox have won 3 games when trailing after 6 innings. This has been an issue since the beginning of last year.

Thus when the White Sox fall behind early there is pretty good chance the game is over. That is fact not hyperbole.

The ineptitude of Dunn, Rios and Pierre have driven fans to the edge. All had plenty of opportunities against the cubs to blow a game open and they failed.

This board is simply a reflection of the fans on the radio and at the park.

Well, to be fair, game threads are a completely different animal, and that's where posts like that will exist. You should expect anything if you venture in there.

Oh I know. I wasn't trying to say I was being singled out. But I prefer just to speak for myself. But I'm done with this now.

This thread has been an entertaining read.

The negative comments are still going to be out there, and I'm assuming (hoping) that once in a while in game threads isn't going to get a poster warned or suspended. I mean, if Juan Pierre steps up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs, how many of us as NOT thinking, "Here comes an out"? Someone's going to post that because we're all saying it to a friend, the wife, the kids, the wall, etc.

As I said before, I understand where the mods are comiing from, and I agree. But a random comment here and there shouldn't start a riot.

No Bmags, its a perfect example because its just posters throwing s*** at the wall for no reason other than to be negative. I dont care about a person complaining about JP or whatever, but (atleast to me) its way more frustrating reading threads where the game is over, then season is over, is half the posts of the thread.

I just dont think those type of posts add to the enjoyment of the board for most people, I know I certainly dont care to read threads where its: "Seasons over", "Games over", etc. But thats just my opinion, which almost always is in disagreement with yours, so at least we are consistent.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 24, 2011 -> 11:47 AM)
That's a terrible example.

I thought the same thing.

I actually think my example is more what Chisoxfn is talking about, but you would have to ask him, but thats at least what I understood to be part of the problem, posters who are posting in negative absolutes just drowning out threads.

He can correct me if Im wrong.

(Edit)

I wasnt giving a definition of hyperbole, I was more trying to explain what I thought Chisoxfn meant by his statement, I guess I could have been more clear and just said "here are examples of the type of posts that are annoying", but I was lazy and just used the word in the thread title.

Edited by Soxbadger

But I don't think this should include game threads. THere have been times during games where I have cursed voodoo spells on juan pierre, and then the play happens and whatever. It's way too hard not to be hyperbolic in the heat of a game.

Game threads are certainly given more latitude, that hasn't changed. But that doesn't mean all rules are off in there either. Just a little more leeway is given.

But the post you used as an example would really only be found in the game threads. I kinda felt those were not being addressed here. Maybe I'm wrong, but those are always gonna be that way. They have for years. It's those sort of comments spilling out into regular threads that spurred this on.

Im not sure that there should be any sort of regulation, Im just saying the type of post that annoys me the most. And its not just in game threads, the problem is it spills over from a game thread into every other thread after.

Can't happen. We talk everything over as a group before a decision like that is made.

I did say "good poster" so maybe that doesn't include me. BUT regardless if its one moderator, or a team of moderators making terrible decisions, it has happened.

Sometimes a group comes to a worse decision than an individual.

Will you be saying them 19 times consecutively or will you be pausing to actually elaborate on them?

Why would that matter? Either they are hyperbole or not. Is some hyperbole allowed?

I will testify that the mod/admin here does way better than any of us would do individually, myself included. I am proud as hell of the work that people put in behind the scenes at Soxtalk. The fact that this thread is even a conversation, instead of closed and pinned thread tells me a lot.

If forum members want to post constant hyperbole and talk in absolutes, you will face potential suspensions (up to indefinite suspensions).

Note: No warnings will be issued, so consider this your warning.

JimH sends his regards! :notworthy

I just think that hyperbole gives you artistic license to give your feelings on a topic in a sometimes entertaining way. Now people are just going to post their negative thoughts literally, and others who aren't even negative have one less tool to make interesting posts. Frankly, I think it will detract from the board more than add to it.

Its not a big deal. That's the end of my input.

I think what people are referring to, J4L, is your tendency to use words like "rape" in your posts.

Seriously, do you need to constantly post things in such an increasingly dramatic and disturbing fashion?
