Through the first two months of the season, the Chicago White Sox were receiving epically-bad production from the third base position. We’re talking sub-.550 OPS, Orlando Hudson is getting meaningful at-bats at a position he’s never played in the Major Leagues before… Meanwhile, the Sox of a different color had a whole other situation on their hands. Their long-time hero Kevin Youkilis went on the DL with back problems, and a super-prospect with a sure-hand at third base came up and sparked their sputtering, injury-riddled offense. We all know how it is, team calls up their top prospect, top prospect rakes (which is exactly what Will Middlebrooks did in posting a .922 OPS in the month of May) and they quickly forget about the abilities of the old man on the DL. All of the sudden, Red Sox nation had a problem. Big Papi was doing Big Papi things, which meant DH was completely covered. Then you have one Adrian Gonzalez manning 1B – so, where will Youk play? Will they send Middlebrooks down? This became a very uncomfortable situation that only built on the animosity that Bobby Valentine started 10 days into the 2012 season when he called out Youkilis, the clubhouse leader: I don’t think he’s as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason. But [on Saturday] it seemed, you know, he’s seeing the ball well, got those two walks, got his on-base percentage up higher than his batting average, which is always a good thing, and he’ll move on from there. So the Red Sox did what any respectable franchise would do – they tried their best to make it work. They considered Middlebrooks at shortstop, a position he played in high school. That quickly fell by the wayside, because teams tend to avoid ruining their top prospects. They played Adrian Gonzalez in RF just enough to get him OF eligibility in fantasy leagues – and then realized it’s a bad idea to play a career 1B in the outfield when he’s your highest paid player. They tried, and it just wasn’t working. For all their effort, Youkilis was still hitting just .233 with a .692 OPS, which, if we’re being honest, isn’t worth it. Trade rumors began to swirl as the Red Sox realized, smartly, it was time for Youk to move on if they could find a willing taker for him and his $12 million salary (with a 2013 $13 million salary or $1 million buyout). The Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and aforementioned White Sox were rumored to have interest. No team needed Kevin Youkilis more than the Chicago White Sox, but they had very little wiggle room in terms of pulling off a trade. On June 24th, the Red Sox agreed to send their hero to the White Sox for Brent Lillibridge (dude’s hitting .155) and Zach Stewart (dude’s got a career 1.57 WHIP), and they also agreed to pay roughly $5.5 of the $7 million remaining on Youk’s salary. Needless to say, it’s pretty apparent that the clubhouse was incredibly awkward to agree to acquire two stiffs and pay for a three time All-Star to leave town to an AL playoff contender. In twelve games since being acquired by the White Sox, Kevin Youkilis has hit like, well, Kevin Youkilis. He has 3 home runs and a walk-off hit en route to a .913 OPS and 13 RBI in 12 f***ing games, and the White Sox are not-so-coincidentally 9-3 in those twelve games and remain in first place atop the AL Central.
