January 10, 201313 yr It doesn't surprise me at all. I bet he would be a much better pitcher sans Ozzie.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:28 PM) It doesn't surprise me at all. I bet he would be a much better pitcher sans Ozzie. Javy's success depends on his team's lack of it.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 04:37 AM) Javy's success depends on his team's lack of it. Having Peavy and Javy on the same team might be "Big Game Choker" overload.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:39 PM) Having Peavy and Javy on the same team might be "Big Game Choker" overload. Peavy doesn't completely implode. Javy just explodes.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:42 PM) Peavy doesn't completely implode. Javy just explodes. he would give whatever team he pitches for 200 innings and win 1/2 of his games.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (Bubba Philips @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:47 PM) he would give whatever team he pitches for 200 innings and win 1/2 of his games. We already have that in Gavin Floyd.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:49 PM) We already have that in Gavin Floyd. we still don't know how soon or what we are going to get out of John Danks maybe the reason why javy is even being considered.
January 10, 201313 yr Scouting for what? To be the waterboy? No thanks. He can go play for Ozzie's team. Edited January 10, 201313 yr by Whitewashed in '05
January 10, 201313 yr Why not? I'd hesitate to give him a guaranteed deal, nothing more than a couple million if I did. Would make trading Gavin less painful and could possibly be really valuable at the deadline.

January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:12 PM) He can go play for Ozzie's team. FOX? Depending on how much he costs, how competitive they plan to be, and what happens with Floyd, this wouldn't be the worst idea. I do kind of miss hearing people call in to Rongey's show and calling him Vaz-Kwez. It could be worth it just for that.
January 10, 201313 yr I wouldn't mind this at all -- you have to assume it's a spring training invite to compete for a #5 job. We have a ton of depth at #5 but none of it is forcing it's way onto the mound. Now, if he wants 5 million bucks, forget it.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:49 PM) We already have that in Gavin Floyd. Who would be dealt in the situation that Vazquez is signed.
January 10, 201313 yr Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Both #WhiteSox and #RedSox also scouted Javier Vazquez tonight. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal This is what you get when you create a huge thread about Rick Hahn not doing anything.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:28 PM) It doesn't surprise me at all. I bet he would be a much better pitcher sans Ozzie. I agree. I'd take him if it didn't take that much to get him.

January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 09:49 PM) We already have that in Gavin Floyd. Looking at the numbers a little closer, Floyds career numbers aren't nearly as good as Vazquez's. Floyd has a higher ERA (4.46 to 4.22), higher H/9 (9.0 to 8.3), lower K/9 (7.0 vs 8.0), higher BB/9 (3.0 vs 2.4) and ERA+ (105 vs 100)
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 09:54 AM) Looking at the numbers a little closer, Floyds career numbers aren't nearly as good as Vazquez's. But Javy's been out of baseball for a whole year, not to mention he's on the wrong side of 35.
January 10, 201313 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:11 AM) Vazquez has had a few good seasons in the NL (one of them real good), Floyd's on-the-surface numbers haven't really looked good since 2008. But Javy's been out of baseball for a whole year, not to mention he's on the wrong side of 35. If they think Santiago, Axelrod, Castro, Rienzo, or anyone else from the group that should start at Charlotte this year will be ready to be contributors at some point during the year, trading Floyd for nothing saves a good chunk of money and Vazquez could cover a month or two, even with an ERA in the 6's, to give them a little more time and save some innings on pitcher X's arm. They've been in the boat of needing to get something useful back if they traded Floyd because of how their rotation stacks up. Signing a guy like Vazquez could be the insurance that lets them dump Floyd for nothing but cash.
