I think the Packers have a shot at beating the 49ers on Sunday. They played them much the last time they played.

The last time they played the Packers had Matthews, who was dominating the read option plays, and the Niners were without Crabtree.

The next tier of bad players is quite far from that trio, who are all fairly close in terms of their grade. FWIW, Mills's negative is almost entirely clustered in his pass blocking, though his run blocking is negative as well. The one thing Mills did well was avoid penalties, taking just two all year. Compare that to Bushrod's 7, which is still better than average.

 

Marshall finishes with the team's best run blocking grade, but it should be emphasized that WRs have many more opportunities to get positive grades than negative grades, which is not true of linemen who are always in prime position to f*** up a play.

Mills was awful this year. People don't realize it because the Bears were good at getting rid of the ball quickly, thus he only gave up 3 sacks. He gave up 62 hurries, which were the most the NFL.

It didnt stand out to me, and I thought he and Long were a good run blocking tandem. As a rookie I wouldnt put him as the worst player on the roster, not by a long shot.

Bear in mind also that Eben Britton lined up alongside Mills about 1/5 of the time, which shows you what they think of him/our line. I hope we get to a point where we don't line up an extra OL all the time.

 

Worth mentioning that offensive tackles are in a position where it's very easy to accumulate negative grades given how they can easily influence every play by not doing their job. The distribution of grades for offensive tackles is really wide, maybe wider than any other position. As you might expect, the center grades are fairly narrow since they are often teaming up on a DT and have a hard time f***ing up or really excelling on any given play.

But to me that doesnt scream the worst player on the Bears. There are probably 5 players on defense that could take that title. Our right side of the line was made up of 2 rookies including one that had been playing the position a little over a year. Thats incredible.

Oh, yeah, the grading system is a bit harsher for tackles though. He obviously didn't hurt us much with his poor play like the defensive players did.

The 49ers were just torched by the Falcons and the Cardinals through the air. To think that Aaron Rodgers can't pass against them is silly.

Mills may have graded out worse than Webb, and may have allowed a lot of hurries of Cutler, but his lack of penalties were really nice. And, I didnt see Jay get absolutely crushed by a rusher because Mills totally whiffed on a block.

 

 

And towards the end of Webbs career as a Bear, im pretty sure Kellen Davis had to hang around Webb to chip block and help out Webb as much as possible because Cutlers brains were getting scrambled. They did leave him out on an island a lot though, but then again they play opposite sides of the line, and the LT is supposed to be the stronger lineman.

Webb honestly wasn't that bad last year. Before last year, Webb had at least one season worse (by PFF grade) than the one that Mills had this year, which is truly an accomplishment

I feel like your opinion might be skewed because when Webb was bad he was really bad. In the San Francisco game last year he gave up 3 sacks and 5 hurries. The rest of the year he gave up 4 sacks.

It was his body of work beyond last year. Saying he wasn't so that bad last year is like saying this piece of crap doesn't smell as bad now as it did before. It still smells, it's still a piece of crap. It's Angelo's fault for having Webb as the only viable option, but the guy was terrible.

Webb allowed 30 hurries, 5 hits, and 7 sacks last year. The team as a whole allowed 133 hurries, 35 hits, and 42 sacks. Webb was the only player to play every snap on the offense. We ran 595 pass plays that year.

 

Our single best rushing lane for that season was to his left and our third best was to his right, despite the fact our LG position was abysmal.

 

Mills allowed 63 hurries, 13 hits, and 3 sacks this season (Bushrod had 4 and Forte had 3, nobody else with more than 2). The team allowed 184 hurries, 46 hits, and 20 sacks on the whole. We ran 664 pass plays this year. Worth mentioning that while he was basically bad all year, he began posting more respectable numbers down the stretch (his best game remained Week 1, though). His run blocking didn't rate positively, but wasn't back-breakingly bad like his pass protection. Not being on the blind side along with a much better offensive scheme saved him from giving up a lot of sacks.

 

I think selective memory is at fault here. Also, Webb was prone to spectacularly bad games, which also is probably related to a scheme in which we never left TEs and RBs in to help protect the passers. Even last season, his "good year" (which would have made him 4th best on this year's line), he had a game where he gave up 3 sacks and 5 additional hurries against SF -- it is essentially where all of his negative pass blocking grade came from, that single game.
