I struggled to read Gatsby in high school. Was bored by it.

I think the worst one ever was The Scarlet Letter

Of Mice and Men was the one w/ George the mentally handicapped fellow, right? That was a sad story.

He just wanted to pet the rabbits

Ah god, poor guy. Having a niece and nephew who are mentally handicapped, I worry they will get in to situations where they are too misunderstood as well. :(

I have always read a ton, but always had a thing against being told what I had to read.

Well, Lenny killed a girl. So, it wasnt that he was all that misunderstood as much as he was without George's supervision

Spark notes should include that part

Weird to think I would forget details of a book we were assigned to read back in High School....

That was one of the few that I thought actually had merit (like To Kill A Mockingbird).

well if Spark notes included those details I am sure you would have remembered

Paradise Lost was one that I really struggled with in College. It was odd though, I really liked parts of it. But I would just get so bored at other parts and wanted to put it down and walk away

Am I the only one who hated reading anything by Shakespeare?

I remember thinking The Giver was badass in 6th grade.

I didnt hate it, but I wasnt ready for it. We started reading his plays in class in 5th grade and I just wasnt tuned into it. I read a few plays in junior and senior year and they were better the second time around

I also really liked the short story The Lottery

Any relation to the story of the West Memphis Three?

The Call of the Wild

To Kill A Mockingbird

The Princess Bride

Welcome To The Monkey House

1984

East of Eden

Killer Angels

The Once and Future King

All of those were very good reads.

I found The Great Gatsby to be boring when I was forced to read it in high school. I don't know if I'd feel differently now...I have no desire to read it again.

When I was a junior in high school, my literature teacher had us read a book by Stephen King. We could pick whatever we wanted. I read Pet Semetary. He said it was as important to read King as it was was to read classic earlier works.
