I don't see Kolek sliding. Lots of smoke gota let it settle.

I could see it. From everything we've heard so far, it really sounds like the Sox are his ceiling. Neither the Cubs or Twins are on him supposedy. He could slide if the Sox don't pop him. I take it all with a grain of salt, but I truly enjoy all the draft tweets and rumor-mongering. Provides me with much entertainment. I love the MLB draft.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 06:25 PM)
In 2004, the Sox had 6 picks in the first 69 selections and 7 picks in the first 89 selections. They signed them all, and so far the group has a cumulative 13.7 career WAR. 14.7 of that WAR is Gio Gonzalez for other teams. So that produced negative WAR for the Sox. It was poor drafting and /or development.
They had 9 picks in the top 150

18 Josh Fields

34 Tyler Lumsden

38 Gio Gonzalez

53 Wes Whisler

59 Donny Lucy

69 Ray Liotta

89 Grant Hansen

119 Lucas Harrell

149 Brandon Allen

Also notable are Adam Russell (179), Jack Egbert (389), Carlos Torres (449) who all at least briefly appeared in the Major Leagues.

Fields and Lumsden had a lot of talent, just busted, Lumsden via injury IIRC. Harrell was very underrated here for a long time, but good stuff definitely, just couldn't control any of it. Had he been able to he'd have been a #3 IMO. Gio was a keeper obviously. Brandon Allen busted too, but he made it to AAA as a legitimate power hitting 1B prospect who Kenny famously dumped for one of the more forgettable players in Sox history, Tony Pena.

Lucy was a bad pick, simple as that. Whisler was f***ing abysmal, don't know what they were thinking there at all. I don't know about Liotta or Hansen although I think Liotta did pretty well for a while and made it to AA as a prospect.

If we keep Gio and develop someone else like Fields, Allen or Harrell, and/or if Lumsden never gets hurt, that's a potentially great draft for us. OTOH, how the f*** did we draft Wes Whisler? I think this draft is a mix of bad scouting/signing s***ty or cheap players, and just the Sox once again being completely inept at developing hitters by progressing them through the system without making them fix their issues on the way up. Hell, if we just trade Fields at the height of his value maybe we get a real nice return. Instead Fields was traded for an even worse player who we then had to pay for 3 years (another Buddy Bell scouting success story).

Also it's worth noting that we drafted the infamous Michael Dubee, but he didn't sign. Little did he know he'd be Sox property a couple years later as a result of the Tadahito Iguchi trade/dump.

There was something out there a while ago about the Twins loving Kolek but they didn't think he had a chance to make it to 5.

I think it's all fuddlesticks and poppycock. No way do several teams pass on the kid. Just disinformation getting put out there.

Certainly possible! I will be following the nonsense regardless. Today's huge rumor via Heyman is the Cubs are all over Schwarber. First we've heard him that high. I would love him if he had a shot at sticking behind the plate.

In that scenario, the White Sox would probably wind up with a potential Nolan Ryan clone in Tyler Kolek, a country boy from outside of Houston whose fastball was clocked at 102 mph this season. John Hart, the Braves' advisor who is an analyst for MLB Network, says Kolek has more potential to dominate than anyone in the Draft.

As a high school power pitcher, he'd bring potential for both career-changing injuries -- think Kerry Wood -- and stalled development. He's listed at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, but he's hardly a big lug. Kolek, like Ryan, was raised with a strong work ethic and has become a workout fanatic. And unlike a young Ryan, he's received high-level coaching that has given him a good idea where his pitches will go.

"This is just not some big, crude kid who is heaving the ball in there," Hart said. "This is a guy who has athleticism. Look, he throws 100 mph. He's going to pitch with a plus-fastball, [but] he's got a late, hard breaking ball. He's got a feel for a nice delivery, clean delivery, easy arm, quick arm. The sky is the limit when you're talking about Kolek."

One other thing to keep in mind about the White Sox. They believe in Don Cooper, Kirk Champion, Curt Hasler, J.R. Perdew and their other pitching coaches. They've historically kept pitchers healthy and aren't afraid to rush them. Kolek could contribute as soon as 2016.

First time in 49 years both teams have picks in the Top 4.

Assuming Aiken is gone by the time the Sox pick, Nola almost makes too much sense. I read earlier that Nola has a #2 ceiling, could fast track to the majors, right handed and projected to be very signable. Just fits too perfect between Sale and Q in the rotation.

I still want Aiken but according to the good things I've read about Nola, I'd be quite happy with him at #3.

im fine with any of the guys we have heard about getting as long as we dont pass on rodon

So is this the new draft thread? Close the other one?

Dan Hayes didn't mention Nola as a possibility. But of course, Hawk started complaining about Boras being Rodon's agent.

He eventually mentioned Nola after talking about the big 3 guys. Hawk seems down on everyone they might take due to one reason or another.

Just my opinion but I'm not sold on Rodon. His heavy work load and use of his slider kinda scares me.

Just another reason why Hawk is NOT a GM, thank god that experiment ended quickly.

Time to lock this thread

Tomorrow at 3:00, maybe :P

Agreed. Consolidate the draft talk to one thread por favor.

Kiley McDaniel mentioned on twitter that he's hearing Rodon or Jackson for Marlins

Rodon is the safe pick and Jackson has been rumored for a week now as the dark horse.

Nick Faleris of Baseball Prospectus has Kolek's stock dropping too.

Key to the whole White Sox draft might be how much the Marlins like Jackson.

True dat.

Just a guess but if in fact Kolek is sliding then its likely teams are beginning to inform one another of their intentions beginning with Houston and trickling down from there.

I have really enjoyed this thread since it was started.

keithlaw ‏@keithlaw 1m

Might go 7 or 8 rather than top 3. “@Strike4YourOut: @keithlaw can you explain what's going on with Kolek?”

Wonder if the Sox are down on him, or the implication is that Rodon will be there and selected.

Ok, as I see it, everybody had at sometime mentioned and talked about who they

wanted and this thread provided constant updates.

now for your pick as you see the sox doing for the 1st round.

I say the sox will pick

#1 Aaron Nola

He, like Rodon, is close to the majors and savings of some slot money. With him, hopefully a rebound

Erik Johnson and maybe a fa pitcher. a making of a good pen.

I like Kolek. I hope we take him. But just give me one of the big three

Steal of this draft will be Matt Tellor..... I hope we draft him sometime on Saturday..

yes, I am a homer and I can admit it...
