Reinsdorf on Score....there's still money in the budget

Well if they bring Paulie back and go with a 7 man bullpen, the bench looks like:

backup catcher

Paulie/Dunn (platoon DH and backup 1B)

L. Garcia super utility player

Danks

Keppinger would have to be dealt. This is similar to how Indians had it last year but with Giambi coming off the bench late in games.

a 6 man bullpen and 5 man bench would look like:

backup catcher

Paulie/Dunn

Garcia super-sub

Kep platoon 3B

Danks

With this, you'd pretty much have to add a right-handed innings eater starter to the rotation instead of going full young with Rienzo and Johnson.

But...having a record as a team with multiple 90 loss seasons in a row really hurts in keeping players/attracting new players as well. A single 90 loss team has put us in a spot where guys who might look for short term deals with competitive teams to take a last shot at a playoff run are poor fits for us.

That might be the best thing....to scare Granderson away, since he wants to play for a winning team.

Tribune story about the interview also hinted that AJ coming back was a possibility.

In fact, sounded like he will absolutely be back when his career ends -- in the TV booth.

To work with hawk before he dies ;)

"Keep paul konerko" = "the white sox are a losing team" = "the white sox don't get stuck with bad contracts for a couple years because no one wants to sign with a team determined to lose".

Actually...you're making an intriguing case.

Yeah, because the possibility of Paul Konerko being back stopped the Sox from signing a franchise changing first baseman...

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 10:56 AM)
Exactly.

The ONLY thing Konerko will cost the Sox is a roster spot for 6 weeks.

So you either think Konerko will suck and then renege on his committment to another full year or get hurt and be out for the year. Or maybe the Chicago Nice Sox management which said he's earned the right to be on the team if he wants will suddenly realize what a huge mistake they made and jettisoned him to the scrap heap ?

If he isn't hitting by the middle of May he'll retire.

Thereby putting the Sox in a position to scramble for a replacement or waste their whole offeseason not looking for a better option ? I hope this is the last thing that happens and he decides not to return . He's already taking too long to make up his mind.

They can bring Konerko back if they can move Dunn. If they can't,they just can't.

This continues to be a great way to make the 2014 white sox a worse team.

You have the Sox contending in 2014?

With Abreu in the fold, they can put a roster out there where they can legitimately say "if everything goes right this roster can compete".

If they sign Paul Konerko, and especially if they dump Dunn to clear a spot for him, that's a move saying they aren't even going to try to field a competitive roster.

That's probably true. Paulie will still want 7 mill or so I'd bet. Also, if he's hitting, he's not going to want to be a part time player IMO. The key is dumping Dunn. The only other option would be a platoon situation of Dunn, Paulie and Abreu between DH and 1B and throw Dunn in the outfield once in a while as well. If Viciedo isn't hitting, Dunn could get some of his at bats in LF as well.

Dunn in the outfield. Dunn, in the outfield.

I think they can definitely be competitive with another move or two.

:lolhitting then please let him retire. I'll take $500k to be just about as effective.

Does "if everything goes right" mean Beckham leads the league in batting. Flowers and Viciedo each hit 50 homers, DeAza steals 60 bases and Sale wins 20 games and doubles as the closer.

Lets realistically hope that they go from 99 to 80 losses next year. That may reguire a lot of things to go right.

How are they different from every other team?

As far as Dunn goes, he's not very good and he's expensive. I'll take my chances that they'll be a better team without Dunn than with him.

He's still expensive even if you try to get rid of him. Saying "he's expensive" is silly when by almost every account you'd have to pay for him whether he's there or not.

How are they different from every other team?
Last year they were different from every other team by having the worst 1b in the game and the worst defense and worst focus I've ever seen. They have hopefully at least fixed one of those problems. If they could fix the other, they at least could say "maybe we can compete".

Better than having both on the team.

Nobody's giving Konerko 7 Mill or even 3 Mill...hopefully they do and spare us from the apparent obligation of having to bring him back.

This team was competitive in 2012 without insane things like that happening.

Were the 85 wins the previous year a fluke?
