Brent Morel claimed by Blue Jays off of waivers

Claimed off waivers

#WhiteSox have claimed LHP Eric Surkamp off waivers from SF Giants. But they also lost Brent Morel to #BlueJays on waivers.

At this point it's not a surprise to see Brent Morel go after acquisitions of Conor Gillaspie and Matt Davidson since last Feb. #WhiteSox

Shame he couldn't get things together. Really put on a show when I saw him in the minors.

I wonder if he could have gotten it together if he back hadn't given out on him.

Shocked someone claimed him.

I dunno. I think he was healthy last year and the bat wasn't there. Who knows though.

The biggest problem I saw with Morel is that he thought he could be effective hitting primarily to the opposite field. However, he didn't have enough power to the opposite field to get it over the right fielder's head.

I think it's very rare athletes overcome major back problems. Scottie Pippen is one I can remember.

Beckham suffers the same affliction.

Anyway, good riddance.

Why September stats don't matter...by Brent Morel.

More surprised he wasn't DFA'd earlier, but this doesn't surprise me in the least. I would say this makes it more likely that Heath is the person DFA'd when the Downs signing becomes official. Also wonder if, barring any other small trades or moves, they aren't pretty much done for the offseason.

I think half of the 40-man has been turned over in the last 6 months. Busy December.

They aren't going into the season with a bench of Konerko, Gillaspie, Keppinger, and De Aza. Someone's going to have to be moved somewhere - there's not even a spot for a catcher on the bench right now. None of those guys can be optioned and it seems pretty silly to acquire Eaton and Davidson and then send them to Charlotte.

I agree, that won't be the bench.

Opening Day, I think the bench will be Jordan Danks, Leury Garcia, Paul Konerko, and a catcher not named Flowers.

It wouldn't shock me at all if Davidson starts the year in AAA. Opening day lineup, IMO, will be

8- Eaton

6- Ramirez

3- Abreu

0- Dunn

9- Garcia

7- Viciedo

5- Gillaspie

2- Flowers

4- Beckham

While I think Davidson will be our opening day 3B, it's not silly at all for him to start 2014 in AAA. Quite frankly, he wasn't that good last year in AAA when you account for league & park adjustments. A brief AAA asignment similar to what we had Asivail do after we acquired him would make some sense, especially if it helps delay his service time.

His promotion needs to be much more "we think you're ready" than "you need a challenge."

^That's Buddy Bell. I took a pic of this, these posters are lining the walls of the Sox FO.

Morel is just a guy. Don't think he will ever hit with enough power to play 3B as a regular in the big leagues.

Good for both parties his time was over in Chicago.

Nice, this clears a spot on the 40 man right? Could use it to grab another catcher now. I think Davidson is MLB ready, even if he goes 220/290/400 we need to re-evaluate that slash line in today's run environment. 10 years ago that's a DFA candidate, not that's a 1 or 2 WAR 3B depending on his defense.

If his defense is really that bad then put him in AAA and let him work on it pressure free, but he's gotta be working his ass off right now on it right, similar to Gillaspie if he just goes from "bad" to "cromulent" his bat will play.

I could be wrong, but more moves have to be coming, just to echo some thoughts upthread, there is no way they go into the season with one of Viciedo or De Aza a platoon or bench player right? It makes way too much sense to grab what you can for De Aza (probably a C level prospect maybe a B if Hahn really pulls one over) and it also makes zero sense to give up on a Viciedo going into a rebuilding year. If he sucks again, fine, dump him, but you have nothing to lose by letting him see if he can turn into a 290/330/480 type with the bat.

Excellent use of cromulent

Pretty sure that with Surkamp the 40 man is full.

And we still have to open up a spot for when the Downs signing is done.
