Abreu is a lot responsible for these last few deals.

I agree, and Abreu could thank Puig for his contract.

If these guys were just average, the money would be so much different. The Sox got Iguchi because Kaz Matsui was a bust. If he played like the last few big profile Cubans, Iguchi would have been far more expensive and probably would have played for another team.

It will be interesting to see what happens when one of these guys they are paying at least $50 million, busts. It probably would then be a good time to go after someone.

It is kind of amazing to look back and think that Alexei's first contract was 4 years at $5 million... total. Can you imagine what he would have gotten today?

Or how big Viciedo's deal seemed back then, compared to the money flying around today.

Lots of misinformation flying around...after their offseason, the Braves don't make much sense.

Excellent writeup.

Hilarious Viciedo article...

“He was available,” Gibbons said. “He's got some big-league time in. Been successful, to a certain extent. Bring him to camp, see what he is.”

Yoan Moncada...hopes to be in the big leagues one year from now.

D Backs already considering giving up on Tomas as a 3b. Parallels with Viciedo?

Pretty much everyone except AZ knew he wasn't a 3B.

The Yankees were given the opportunity to top the Red Sox‘s $31.5MM offer to Yoan Moncada, but declined. “We scouted him extensively for years,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. “I feel we put him through the highest level of scouting and medical evaluation. I just wasn’t comfortable offering what we actually offered ($25MM), let alone going any higher.“

For now, the Red Sox will play Moncada at second base, but his eventual position will depend on Boston’s needs in the next couple of years.

Sour grapes, or real concerns about his asking price not being lined up with the cost? Obviously, for Cashman, it will be a nightmare if he does go on to haunt the Yankees for six or more upcoming seasons.

Most recent update on Olivera situation.

Can't believe he's expecting a 6 year offer at age 30 when James Shields could only get 4.

James Shields isn't 30.

Yay....the mods can celebrate, haha.

Actually, they now have three arguably overpaid middle infielders from Cuba....and just signed a backend starter/long man for $8 million as well.

Now we can officially change this to the Vladimir Gutierrez/Yadier Alvares thread!!! Sponsored by LDF.

Arruebarrueana sounds a lot like Leury and Rondon.

Alex Guerrero and Juan Uribe both just became expendable. Dodgers have Kendrick, Rollins and still need to find room for top propect Kyle Seager...and Olivera as well. 3b?

http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/dodg...0324-story.html

Expensive "win now" insurance policy for Juan Uribe/Seager at third. Might not start until year 31 season.

Uribe, Kendrick and Rollins are all FAs after the year.

Cant imagine wasting what could be his best remaining Mlb season and $10 million on a bench player...if you take his $28 million signing bonus into consideration, its an even costlier budget line item.

Then theres the $50 plus million tied to Guerrero and C. Rondon-lite.

Now I am pulling this from the article you posted, but there's a good chance Olivera is out for the year because he needs a TJ surgery. The LA FO has said he fits will in 2016.

We shall see. That tv deal is ruining baseball competitive balance.

According to an industry source, though, a recent MRI on Olivera's elbow showed a slight tear in the UCL. His contract includes a clause that gives the team a seventh season at $1 million if he needs Tommy John surgery.

7. Hector Olivera and the rest of the Cuban imports who sign what seem like huge-money deals often do end up monstrous bargains. If the cost of a marginal win really is around $7.5 million, Yoenis Cespedes could produce the entire value of his $36 million deal this year alone. According to FanGraphs' calculations, Yasiel Puig last season provided $40.5 million in value. He signed for seven years and $42 million.

Getting major league-ready players for mid-level salaries is an absolute coup, and Olivera could be the latest. He's massacring Triple-A pitching, with a pair of four-hit games, the latest of which came Friday and included a triple and a home run. Considering Justin Turner is thriving in everyday duty – he's up to .333/.401/.579 – there isn't exactly an open spot for Olivera at the moment. Soon enough, though, he'll hit his way into the major leagues, and the Dodgers will have a problem about which complaints will be met with a tiny fiddle.

After a few down years, third base is finally back with a vengeance, maybe the deepest position in baseball. Olivera will join Frazier, Josh Donaldson, Kris Bryant, Nolan Arenado, Evan Longoria, Kyle Seager, Matt Carpenter, Mike Moustakas, Adrian Beltre and …

8. Manny Machado
