It's mutually beneficial for both parties. And while I don't know every detail, since he has been on LTIR since 2011, I assume at some point the team could have gone to the league or NHLPA to discuss not paying him since he has been injured for 5+ years, but again the team is happy he is on LTIR and the avoidance of the cap hit.
