According to this, rejecting an option (team or player) doesn't prevent a team from offering a QO.

In Gordon's case, he had a $14 million player option but declined since he's widely expected to be offered 5/100 by someone.

So the Royals will get back the draft pick compensation at the very least. They will offer him three years at $65-70 million with some type of amenable option on a fourth year. Then it comes down to whether he's willing to give up $30-35 million in guaranteed money to leave the only organization he's ever played for and a place where he's totally comfortable.

Before anymore qualifying offer questions are asked I think it's important to point out that the QO is worth 15.8 M this year. If a player isn't percieved to be worth that much then they will not get a QO.

Why would any team reject a $10 Mill option, only to make a 15M QO?

I know it's hard to believe it now, but Sox life will go on without Alexei. The org. will find a way to endure.

Not only that, but pay $1 million for that ability.

True, but we don't know what the plan is. Like I said earlier, an infield of Olt, Saladino, Sanchez (or Micah), Abreu is very very weak offensively. We don't have a shortstop and nobody's really stated a possible acquisition at short. So it'll probably be Saladino/Beckham, LOL at that.

Beckham is a FA and with so many infielders its doubtful the Sox bring him back.

One idea for SS could be Asdrubal Cabrera, depending on his asking price and if the Sox do indeed part ways with Alexei.

For some perspective from a guy in the industry, Keith Law just posted his top 50 free agents list and Alexei came in at #47. He said that it was smart the Sox declined his option, and it could create a buy-low opportunity for another club and said he would give him a one year deal at 3-4 million. FWIW

One thing I forgot is Lexi could be 42 by now. The age thing.

That's true. I really doubt he came over with a legit birth certificate.

I agree that it was smart to decline. But some team that has their sights set on the playoffs may take a run at him w 6-8 mil if they feel he could fill a hole they have at a key position.

Beckham - that's not even contingency plan 1004.

Cabrera's a lousy defender. Rather Saladino The FA market for SS sucks. yes someone will sign Alexei for 6-7 mill. The lesson, really, is that we should have traded him last winter.

No, the FO thought they were going to contend for a playoff spot back then. Hell, they thought they were still contending at the July trade deadline.

Maybe.

Or maybe they didn't want to give the impression that they weren't going for it.

July inactivity = scars from the White Flag which at this point probably stick in JR's mind and nowhere else.

Sox haven't closed the door on bringing Alexei back, but didn't want to pay him $10 million. Someone else will.

Rick Hahn said door isn't closed on Alexei Ramirez returning. But he expects SS will find a decent market in FA. #WhiteSox

Seems to be pretty evident he isn't coming back unless he wants to take an actual discount

Agree. I think he'll probably go to San Diego. Him or Asdrubal I suppose.

Sources: #Padres still talking to SS Alexei Ramirez, as first reported by @MLBBruceLevine. Would require shorter term than Desmond.

Signing Ramirez also would enable #Padres to keep 2nd-round pick (1st pick, No. 8 overall, is protected). SD could get six picks in top 100.
